Is it just me are Korean really superstitious about their health? It's not even superstition exactly. From what I've experienced, they eat a lot of things, drink a lot of things, and do a lot of things that they feel are really beneficial for your health but would be considered a bad infomercial product back in the states.

Agreed. Unfortunately, western nations have their own superstitious health beliefs, like homeopathy.

Whether or not it's true that western nations possess such beliefs is irrelevent to the discussion and should not be used as a way of diminishing the ludicrous nature of such beliefs in Korea.

I once read that someone thought that carbohydrates were worse than saturated fats. How retarded is that?

No, it totally does. That's how context works.

You'll notice that I do agree with the OP and don't argue the point. I was merely bemoaning the fact that baseless beliefs seem to be an international phenomenon and not unique to a subset of the Korean population. Did you know, for example, that the British NHS maintains four homoeopathic hospitals? Or that many Christians believe in faith healing? Sad, isn't it?

Perhaps you're referring to the fact that health insurance here covers Chinese medicine and treatments, the fact that ginseng proliferates anywhere and everywhere you go, people talk about bleeding out their thumb to get rid of a stomachache, etc? A number of things I'll try, but I have a real hard time believing some of them based on a lack of credible evidence.

Ok, you're burning little sticks of mugwort on my injured appendage while little needles are stuck in various parts of the surrounding muscle. It conjures up images of opium dens and I enjoy the attractive nurse working for you, but is it actually healing anything? I have a hard time believing so, but the experience only cost me 6,000 won, so I suppose it has at the very least given me something to do for the afternoon.

Lots of things survive from the old days. Used to be if you had liver problems, you'd eat liver. Vision problems? Eat eyes. Don't even start on what they used before Viagra.

Sorry, I misinterpreted what you wrote. It's just that I'm accustomed to people pointing out the negative characteristics of another group to diminish any criticism against Korea. This is a common argumentative technique of apologists. You make a criticism and someone can always quote another situation that's equal to or worse than the one currently under discussion. Your intent my have been to bemoan the fact that these beliefs are prevalent throughout the world. However, the effect is to take attention away from/pardon this negative aspect of Korean culture.
This is why I reacted the way I did.

Don't drink OJ after a night of drinking soju. We have to wonder if these superstitions are a negative about Korean culture. Koreans seem healthier than Americans by far.

Not very. Carbohydrates, especially the refined white ones, have almost zero nutritional value. You might as well be eating a big bag of sugar.
