Does your school have many teacher activities? I'm talking about the after school dinners - the volleyball games - the hiking trips every semester.
I'm under the impression that Korean high school teachers are much busier than middles school teachers. I'm wondering if the 'required' social activities are less because of that. |

Much less I think... although this my first year at a public school. I've been here 6 months and have had one hiking adventure, and two dinners. That is all. |

I've been teaching at a public high school for over a year, so I've gotten to sample the full year schedule.
1. Once a semester there's a hiking trip.
2. When the students go on their class trip, at the very least you'll go out to lunch. I think over the 4 day period I went out 3 times.
3. Dinners only for special occasions, i.e. usually a first week of school dinner in February or March, if a teacher is retiring, etc. I'd say over the course of a year I went to a total of 5 all teacher dinners.
4. We had a few English department lunches, maybe 4 in the year.
5. We had a...bonding time day where a small group of teachers did an activity of their choosing. 20k won budget per teacher and pictures had to be taken.
6. The teachers take a trip together, usually in early February, usually just overnight. Last year they went to Busan, this year Seoul. My Girlfriend teaches at the middle school and they took a 3day trip to Japan.
That's about all I can think of. I guess when I write it down it sounds like a lot. I think it's because I teach at an academic high school which means more things to celebrate, higher number of demo classes and visitors (which usually warrants a department meal) and maybe older teachers => more retirements? Just my guess though. |

I think it depends on your school. I taught my first year here 08-09 in an Academic HS and all we did were 4 English Dept lunches. No hiking, no sports for teachers, nothing. Actually rarley do any of the schools in my area do any of this. Lunches and dinners, yes but no other stuff. |

Academic highschool here and we've had a few teacher dinners, one teacher sports day and one field trip. If anything, I have more time/days off than my friends who teach middle/elementary. |

My vocational HS had just a few outings this year. A couple of dinners (one at the beginning of the year to welcome new people, and one at the end of the 1st semester to say goodbye to those who were leaving) and a ski trip in December (which I declined to attend). We also had a sports day competing against the teachers from my city's 3 other high schools; that was kind of fun though I didn't play anything. Just one English department lunch, and that two days ago, to say goodbye to me. Everyone is pretty busy here. We had our EOZ, the cooking room, and all the bathrooms remodeled so that may be part of it. I did love all the extra days off though. |

OP, schools are different. But high schools do have to worry more about the National exam and other tests. That means fewer class trips for you. BUT, they do have plenty of other in-school activities. |
