Brian Deutsch, the famous expat blogger of the blog, "Brian in Jeollanam-do" ( http://briandeutsch.blogspot.com/ ), is leaving Korea.

Brian Deutsch wasn't just any blogger. In addition to providing entertaining and thought provoking articles, he was an activist for foreigners living in Korea. He wasn't afraid to criticize and would bring attention to injustices and outrageous things in Korea that affected the expat community. He also occassionally wrote opinion pieces for The Korea Times and The Korea Herald.

His activism brought the fury of Korean netizens and Korea Times reporter Kang Shin-who even tried to have Brian Deutsch deported.

Here's an article by The Korea Times about Brian Deutsch's soon-to-be exit from Korea:

'Angriest Blogger' Leaving Korea
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/special/2010/02/177_60159.html

I am sad to see Brian Deutsch leave and on behalf of the expat community I would like to thank him for the good work that he has done for our community.

I wish him well on his future endeavors and his new life in America. He will be missed.

Cool

Does it say why?

Perhaps fed-up with schools that threaten to fire him simply for defending himself against third-party libel and stalking?

Everyone knows Korean Rum Diary is much angrier and hates Korea much more than "Blian Golden Balls," but I guess he was first.

But yeah I'll miss reading his articles. This guy could have a future in journalism!

Brian always struck me as pretty even handed, and took his job teaching seriously. This is, of course, why he could come off as critical of the clusterlovemaking that is Korean public education. Having a functioning brain and having a stake in doing a decent job will do that you.

I met him purely by chance one time about a year and a half ago. He struck me as a nice and intelligent person.

Yes, he will be surely missed- I hope there will be someone with the balls to stand to stand up to the xenophobes and apologists will take his place soon.

Should we throw him a party?

One of you ask him if he can come to Seoul one last time, and we'll suprise him at a bar. Make it a NICE one, this time.

The blog was interesting. I did not always agree with what he wrote but at least he was pro-active.

Too bad he is leaving but the reality of blogging is that his blog will simply be replaced by another one....

When you read blogs and start to cross-reference you see that the major ones are basically rehasing what others say. Blogs also tend to be highly reactive and highly personal...but some bloggers forget that and start to see their blogs are serious news sources or their reach as bigger than it actually is.

Blogs are usually great for light reading, casual information and for people who feel the need to expose their daily lives and thoughts to the online public. They are like many things online, a decent resource once you take them for what they actually are.

Good luck to Mr Deutch in whatever endeavor he undertakes now.
