So, tonight, I'm having a coffee with a K Chick and this drunk adjossi scum walks up and starts trash talking her and me in Korean. I understood enough basic Korean to know that he was discussing me and could only guess at the rest. Then she goes to the bathroom and he starts telling me in broken english to "be careful". It took all my inner strength to hold back. So, she comes back and he tries to say more to her but we leave.
So the problem is this, if the police had of gotten involved, there is no doubt they would believe adjossi man over me because he is Korean. This is crap and every single one of us needs to email our member of parliament or representative or senator. Also, we need to get family members to contact their local rep too. There needs to be a high level contact with the Korean goverment about these issues and the treatment of westerners living in their countries. This is specifically so Koreans can't treat us like garbage and so the cops will not be allowed to discriminate against us. If western goverments, especially America, starts flexing its muscle, the Korean goverment will fold faster than superman on laundry day.
Might be a good start to having official government policies against racsim and ordering public officials, such as police officers, to treat foriegners equally. Also, if there were some type of permanent government body that foriegners could complain to that was outside the adjossi network.
Most know or have heard many stories here. I am afraid if I see this guy again I may tell him where to go. The cops job is to tell someone like that causing problems to go away and shut up, not to hassle me, which I am sure they would.
If all of us send mass emails, along with our families, to our elected reps back home, perhaps pressure could be put on this country like never before to seriously tackle racism here.
Now, this does not mean that all Koreans are bad. Many are far from it and very kind. This also does not mean police shouldn't prosecute foriegners who break laws such as smoking weed. It means those with malice and hate should not be allowed to threaten others and that the police need to do a better job being impartial. (Or face outside pressure to do so.) |

Its a shame you encountered the problem, but your title Rasicm?? Let's do something about it!!!! is a little funny cause you didn't do anything about it.
Recently an Indian man was a victim of racist comments. The Indian man had a female companion who acted as a witness. It was an international news item. Charges were filed and the offender was found guilty in court and had to pay a penalty.
So a precedent has been set, the court system has shown it can be favorable to foreigners in this situation.
But you didn't do anything about it so what's the point? |

This is the sort of thread which could elicit either a yawn or might explode. I will only say that you handled the situation very well under unfair circumstances. The ajoshi acted like a total jerk, knowing he could hassle you with relatively little risk.
If many posters here give jaded answers, or simply try to start an argument about other countries being the same way, it is because some of us have lived here longer and seen this again, and again. If it makes you feel better, I wonder how many people in that cafe did nothing but privately were ashamed of their country after you took the high road. This sort of thing leads to longer term but deeper changes. |

Jesus I can just picture Urban Myth, Madoka and Steeralis salivating at this thread.
In regards to your thread I could write a book on the points mentioned, but don't expect any action of the sorts. Why? For precisely the same reasons you yourself have mentioned.
Racism is here to stay, just like kimchi and 4 seasons. Just have to elarn to deal with it I am afraid. |

If you are truly going to battle against racism, I suggest you don't use terms like this. I don't care personally, but others could find it at the very least sexist and perhaps a tad racist. |

'Wow a drunken old ahole doesn't like inter racial dating.
So what. Do you think this doesn't happen in western countries.
The problem with the lot that complain about racism in Korea is that they come from countries where they are the majority not the racial minority.
You don't think asian or black kids get the snot kicked out of them when they date white girls in a mostly white town.
Trust me they do.
No government is going to care about a few thousand teachers in Korea. Even if every teacher wrote a complain, nothing would be done. |

I didn't do anything about it because I read all the stories about racist cops. I can't remember the links. But basically someone was in a similiar situation and they called the cops and the cops believed the adjossi because he was Korean. That's why I held back and because I am in a small town. However, if we can get our governments back home to put pressure on Korea, this can achieve something more than what "a lowly english teacher" (as Koreans say it) can achieve. If I knew the cops would truly have been impartial, I would have called them and filed a complaint against them. As for the Indian professor, it really changes nothing. See what will happen if any of you run into trouble. Don't kid yourself! You better know a high powered lawyer and where to turn quickly or you're screwed! However, if our governments put pressure on this one, it can eventually achieve results and we won't have to go through this B S. |

Sorry, used so often by everyone here, I picked up the term. Anyhow, I don't mean anything by it except to say I was with a Korean woman. |

If you are a minority from back home and went through it, I'm sorry you had to suffer this. Personally, I don't care if a white girl dates a black man, an hispanic, a korean, or a martian. Nowadays, most small towns in Canada can accept it. I am sure there are a few A Holes who can't and might be ignorant, but most "whiteys" have either accepted it or become resigned to it even if they don't like it. Maybe, the deep south in America might still have problems. I don't know; I don't live there. While our society is far from perfect, police are bound by laws. Even in the south, a person can file a legal complaint under civil rights legislation. Rights like this are non existant here and most police will go along with the adjossi. If anyone donesn't believe me, get into fights (defending yourself) and see where it gets you. |

Then, perhaps, women who use the term boy to describe a man, are also sexist. |

I'm sure the government won't; but if we ask our families back home to get on the bandwagon too, then it's different.
Twenty thousand or more to be exact. It's this attitude of apathy that prevents anything from happening.
Out of this many teachers, there must be at a few that come from political families. Pull some strings and make things happen. |
