I'll keep it short. I have been working with Win Education for the past 11 months since March 2008. It's coming to the end of my contract and I want to make sure I don't get screwed around with severance and final paycheck. Since I am flying out of korea on monday march 2nd and my final day teaching is friday 27th feb i wanna make sure everything is paid as expected on the last day of work, because if it isn't then I wont have much time to get my money.

Main concern for me is that on my contract the dates go from 10th march 2008-9th march 2009. However my visa expires on 28th of february. I asked my company about this and they have informed me that I am my last day of work is fri 27th of february. Therefor I'm wondering can they get out of paying me severance if I don't work until the last day of the contract(march 9th)? I'm not sure what the law is with severance pay, do you have to work an exact 12 month period or is it fine finishing one week before as in my case?

They'll try to get out of it and claim that they're within their rights to do so.

Better confirm with them that you're getting it on your last day.

Have you had experience in this situation?

Hello Maka,

I was in a similar situation last year (not with Wineducation though, with another hogwon). It was because my first few weeks of work were illegal...then the school sent me on a Japan visa run as promised. This meant that the dates in my visa and contract were a few weeks ahead of my actual start/end dates.

My school kept to their verbal promise (although i was doubting them up to the last minute....you can never really trust a hogwon). The paid me on the last day of my actual 12 months (my contract had still a few more weeks left before it expired).

I guess it depends whether or not you trust your employer. Are they honest and do what they promise? Or are they lying cheating ******* ?

I posted a question about Wineducation a few weeks ago but got no responses. I asked if anyone had positive experiences with them cos i had read quite a few negative reports on them. What was your experience Maka? Would you recommend Wineducation?

i've had absolutely no problems since I started, the job has been fine and I've always been paid on time. If I get my full final paycheck and severance pay then it will have been a perfect time. If they try to screw me, which I'm worried about then it won't be good. It's very sneaky of them the way they set my E-2 visa to expire 1 week before end of my contract leaving them a chance to try not to pay my severance pay. Maybe everything will go fine at the end, who knows.

They probably screwed you out of something already. What about the 50% pay thing at the beginning? Did they do that to you?

I posted their contract in the contract thread a few weeks ago and stated that I couldnt believe anyone in their right mind would agree to it! Charging 200,000 won for missing a day with sickness, no helath, no pension, the right to sue, no flights. The list goes on and on, I actually made about 30 revisions to the contract and sent it back to them only to be told that they wouldnt change anything and that 60+ teachers have signed and are happy with it.

I suppose that in reality, it might be fine working for them day-to-day, but I definitely wouldnt like to have that crappy contract to fall back on when the shit hits the fan!

Let's hope that everything works out ok for you OP and that they don't scrw you over. If they have been good with paying then it should be fine. I would just ask them to extend your visa by a few weeks (after the period on your contract) or ask them to change the contract and both of you sign and date it with a clause saying that it supersedes any older contract.

Good luck!

Are you talking about posting the contract for Win Education? Would you
be able to send me the revised contract that you sent back to them? I'd
love to compare as I'll be having an interview with them soon!
Thanks so much!

be very wary about Win Education (do a search). They have a notorious reputation for scams and screwing people over.

Hi There,

Depending on the contract I think they are within their legal rights not to pay severence if you go early. If you can go early because of another teacher's arrival why not get a signed letter to the effect that they will still pay?

New teachers can fall through. It's fine finishing as long as the school is nice about it but by the time you have taken a week off it could be too late. Be careful there is a fair gap between the finishing and contract date.

If the visa will run out I think you can organise a travel extension at the immigration office of around a week without a problem. A work extension could mean you have to have documents from your school.

Immigration would have your contract as well as visa information. Is it possible to make a visit to immi ASAP and see if they could do the extension without the school first? Check if it is for work. If you have a work extension for a week you don't have to worry, unless the airfare is all set?!

Good Luck,

well when you interview with them ask if they require a separate bank account (1 for them exlusively to funnel the money in to - that is separate from your main bank account). The double bank book scam is one of them

Is A.S.N.'s owner a Korean-Canadian named Jack Lee?
