So, I'm in the market for a 32-42 inch LCD TV.

I am aware that when I see "full HD" associated with TV's here, it's for TV's that are 1920p.

My question to you fellow techy nerds is, what in the world runs on 1920p? Does HD television programming here run at 1920p? That seems mind-boggling since it was 720p in the US when I left in September. I know PS3's and Blu-Ray run at 1080p.

I mainly only watch TV for sports. Will I be able to watch soccer in 1920p here? I'm trying to figure out if I should spring the extra won for 1920p.

I think you must be mistaken. There are no TVs with a 1920 pixel vertical resolution. Currently, the maximum television resolution is 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high, supporting 1080p24/1080p30/1080i60 signals.

Unless you plan on sitting with your nose less than 3 or 4 feet away, 1080p on a 32" is a waste to spend extra for.

On a 42", then get a 1080p set.

Do you have any recommendations for sets in the 32 to 42 range? Cheaper is better.

Samsung is better than LG, but LG will be cheaper. Sony is my favorite of all of them, but they're taxed really, really high, and aren't economically feasible to purchase in Korea.

You really have to just look at them and choose for yourself. I suggest looking at Costco, but keep in mind that they sometimes use a crappy input on one TV and a better input on another (same at many places). The higher the HZ rating, the better. 240hz is better than 120hz. Make sure you get at least 120hz, I'd say.

LED TV's are nice, but not worth the premium price tag just yet.

I honestly wouldn't purchase a new HDTV now. I'd wait until the 3D sets come out. I think they must be 240hz to be 3D compatible later, but don't quote me on that.

If you decide on 32" get the 720p.

If you decide on 42" then get the 1080p.

Samsung has some of the best panels, especially at the lower price range.

Is it even possible to buy a new TV here at 720p?

Is it possible for me to bu y a 40-42 inch LG/Samsung 1080p LCD for less than 900k?

I've been here for almost 5 months without TV and survived, but I am desperate to get one in time for the World Cup.

Yes.

Search here: http://www.enuri.com/view/Listmp3.jsp?cate=020111

Hover your mouse over the square boxes about 1/3 down the screen to select the style (LCD, LED, PDP, etc.) resolution and size of TV you want.

Here are some of the lowest-priced 32" sets at 720p (768p, actually):

Here are a couple of the lowest-priced 40 and 42" 1080p sets:

imho i think 720p is fine for even 50inch screens...i paid 700k for a plasma pavv (2nd hand) and all movies look awesome on it...really can not see any difference between this and 1080p that my friend has on his 42inch tv...i kinda think its a con to get more money out of you. maybe others feel differently tho and can notice those extra pixels.

xbox 360 and pc also looks fantastic on it. if u go plasma get one with 600Hz...way smoother than lcd..and better contrasts on colors and deeper blacks. should be able to get a 50inch plasma for about a mil.

On a big screen TV, you can really tell the difference between 720p and 1080p with a blu-Ray movie. YOu pay attention to background details. Things like the sidewalk, grass on the lawn, buildings look a lot sharper.

That's a big unless though. I'm looking at a 26" for my next TV and I'm definitely not going to be happy with 1366x786 or what ever that horrid res is. If you're a PC gamer (or even a PS3 player who prefers a desk chair) then 1080p at well below 32" is no waste.

I think I could stretch up to 2million but ideally around 1.5.

Am I right in thinking that a 50" Plasma will be quite a lot cheaper than a 50" LCD?

At that size are there any advantages/disadvantages of one (LCD or PDP) over the other?
