|
|
Hello:
Ive been working in South Korea for about 2 years at the same hagwon and now Im looking for a change of scenery. To make a long story short, I want to do one more year in Korea so I can study for the GRE, spend more time with my lady friend (who knows where that will go), and just enjoy my time in Korea a bit more. For the past two years Ive been working my butt off at my hagwon. Its an honest place, I know that I am actually teaching, Im paid well, and I love my apartment. However, the work is killing me and I barely have time to sit down in order to get my life sorted and planned out. Now Im looking at working for SMOE, but I have my concerns.
I dont want to make this into a long diatribe with questions, but anyones help and opinions would be much obliged.
Im extending my contract with my current hagwon until late July, but I am considering going until late August so my current job can simply pass my VISA off to SMOE for the Fall 2010 school year.
1. If Ive been working Korea for 2 years already, what is the VISA process like if I were to go back home for a month and then come back? Do I still need to go through the apostille, background check, consulate interview and all the other BS that was needed to come here in the first place? Or is everything stream lined if you are coming back?
2. Has anyone interviewed with SMOE while in Korea? How does that whole process work? Did you find your placement to be better since they actually met you before hand? Thats what I am planning on doing.
3. When is a good time to start applying? I would like to apply for the Fall 2010 school year.
4. After that whole fiasco with SMOE telling 100 or so teachers they dont have jobs at the last minute, do you think that will likely repeat? My biggest fear is going home for that month of August, ready to come back, and history repeats itself leaving me stranded and without a job.
5. In your opinion, would it be wise to go home for that month then come back to Korea? Or stick it out in Korea and start a new job right away? Im pretty torn on this aspect of finding a new job. Family obligations back home or future life obligations here.
Thanks for your help! Cheers!

1. Yes, unfortunatly you have to do this everytime you get a new job in Korea b/c they are issuing you a new E2 visa (as opposed to just extending it)... So start getting your documents in order now to save you hassle later
2. Not sure, sorry... But because the vast majority of SMOE hires go through recruiters you might have to as well.
3. Hiring for August begins in late May, early June... Contact a recruiter
4. Anything is possible... No one thought that something like that would happen in the first place...
5. Depends on when your contract ends... Plus SMOE will give you 1.3 million for airfare so why not? |
