I live in Donghae, which is the "city" just north of Samcheok. I've been to Samcheok a few times and many of my adult students are from there. Most of them seem to like it. Apparently the beaches are fairly nice. And if you like hiking, Mureung Valley (one of the nicest places I've been in Korea) is inland not too far, right between Donghae and Samcheok.
There's an E-mart in Donghae and a Homeplus downtown Samcheok. I don't know about movie theatres in Samcheok, but there's a new LotteCinema with 5 screens downtown Donghae. There are regular city buses between Donghae and Samcheok that cost about 1,400 won I think.
I take the bus into Seoul once in a while, and most of the buses seem to be Samcheok/Donghae/Seoul. It usually takes 3 to 3.5 hours from Donghae, so add another half hour from Samcheok. From Donghae, they leave about every half hour or so, and I'd assume almost as frequently from Samcheok. |
