Does the concept exist in Korea? Or do I just have to find some abandoned patch of earth in a lot somewhere?

It doesn't seem like too many people garden, but there are some resources. I'm trying to start a rooftop garden this year and I've been searching for materials. You can find some seeds and a few gardening supplies at a florist or 꽃집, but those places are more for houseplants and flowers. The Daiso 1,000 won store is good for cheap buckets.
I asked my coteacher where I could go to buy seeds and materials and she told me to look for a "종묘상회" I'm going to find the one in my town after work today...you could give it a shot too.
I'd like to have my own lot too, but I think I can grow what I want, mostly herbs, on the rooftop. |

Last year me and some pals had big beautiful plots in Jagok community garden at Suseo Station. It's about a ten minute walk from the station and a fifteen minute walk from the Tancheon stream, but we always just biked there. We'll be going out to get our plots in the next couple of weeks, and they're pretty reasonable. 90 000 won to have the plot for the whole season, and we got two harvests out of ours plus a continual (sometimes overwhelming) supply of greens. The plot was big enough that two people shared one plot and still came out with heaps of veggies, though we're each getting our own plot this year so that we can jar some preserves for the winter (pickled beets, how I miss you...)
They have tools, they fertilize well in springtime with chicken manure, and the soil comes already tilled. There are organic seedlings they've started in their greenhouses that you can buy for cheap on premises as well as a huge variety of seeds.
I can try to write out some directions, but you're welcome just to come with us when we go get our plots! |
