Yeah, it's the one in the same area with the cafe, PC bang and convenience store. Everyone knows where that is.
I've sworn off pho places in Korea. Not after I went to one that used cha chiang mein noodles instead of rice noodles. *shudders* |

There are 2 places out in Ilsan. We tried the first one and I always have the Pho ga (with chicken) and it was really good, even if I think they may have used some chicken flavouring in the broth it had rice noodles, sliced chicken breast, green onion and all that jazz. I was happy. I then saw another place that was nearby that i'd like to try out again. I dont know if either is viet-owned or anything but certainly not ramen noodles or whatever that was served to you at the last place! |

There wa a good place near Jonggak sation. Kind of down the street a bit from the big Jongno-gu office. You will walk past a burger king and i think it might be in the next building ir possibly the one after thay. It is on the first floor of a pretty big officetel there. I forget the name of the place, but it's pretty tasty and run by a couple of Vietnamese women. |

Sorry, but I highly doubt this was real pho. Have you ever had true Vietnamese pho? |

Wanna hear something really disappointing? Chains like Pho Mein in Korea serve you the same pho you can cook yourself for about 2500 (for 2 servings) at emart. It comes with noodles, soup packet w/dried chili, and gochujang hot sauce. It is identical to what you get served, but they might throw in some shrimp or beef in there.
It is like they are open up a bag ramen cooking that for you and charge you 10,000 won for it and call it pho. Just how little effort goes into preparation of what they serve, the people working there must wonder if they are running a scam.
Dying for some authentic pho tai in Korea. But it is understandable why it is hard to get here. Authentic pho soup is way too salty for the average Korean palate. When I visit the US, the saltiness hits me like a ton of bricks because my palate needs adjusting. I find it enjoyable again in a short while though. |

Living in Canada, I never even tried Pho.
When I arrived in Korea, I basically tried pho for the first time, at one of those chain places in AK dept store. I loved it.
There was a pho mein place near my house in Anyang and I thought that shit was awesome.
Now that I'm back in Canada, the pho i get here sucks. I want pho mein... |

Where do you even come from? There are tons of pho places all over Canada. In Montreal you can't even throw a stone without hitting a pho restaurant.
Anyhow, the only way you will find a decent pho in Korea is to go down to Ansan (line 4, exit 1). Any of the pho there will beat any of the pho in Seoul. The pho is tastier, it has more side herbs, it has more meat and its cheaper.
Once you are in Ansan, you can go see stuff around Oido or go down across the long bridge you can see on the map across from Oido (bus 123 straight from Ansan) and then come back in the evening for some delicious Malaysia food back in Ansan (경기도 안산시 단원구 원곡동 789 in naver). |

My favorite pho restaurant in Seoul is located near Hapjeong station. You would exit the station from exit 6 and then take an immediate left at the first block upon leaving the station. Once you hit the corner after your left turn right and walk down that street for a couple of blocks and you will see an establishment with a cyclo parked outside the front of it. I can't remember the name of the place offhand but the service is good and the food is delicious. They even have a Vietnamese gentleman pulling noodles and pouring broth, I guess to add to the authenticity of the place. Whenever I go there is always a line and the customers seem to genuinely enjoy the food. They will even throw in some fresh cilantro for you if you ask. The only thing that is missing in my opinion is fresh basil and lime. Also, they don't keep the beers very cold and seem to serve standard Hanoi beer that tastes like glorified Cass IMO.
Another great pho place is Le Saigon over near Noksapyeong station. This was my go to pho restaurant in Seoul until I found the place I just mentioned. For a review of Le Saigon check out this website - http://seoulmusings.blogspot.kr/2011/05/le-saigon.html
Both of these places are great but they can never replicate the authentic pho experience you will find in Vietnam, in the US or even in Canada. If you want great pho you need to go to the source of that greatness and where Vietnamese people tend to congregate. I spent the last year teaching and living in Phnom Penh, and the $1.50 pho I was eating there destroys any pho I have found on the Peninsula since my return. Do yourself a favor and book a plane ticket down to Vietnam this summer for some great eats. |
