I keep reading about how Windows 7 damages laptop batteries. Does anyone here have any experiences that would suggest this to be true (or untrue)?

I recently picked up my free W7 upgrade during a trip home and would love to "upgrade" from Vista but am a bit reluctant to do so because of all these reported battery issues. I love Windows 7, but not enough to have to jail my laptop to an electrical outlet.

And no, this is not any reason for me to switch over to a Mac--the Bose of computers.

Try installing XP on a partition, then you can choose which OS you prefer.

I run Windows 7 on my netbook and the battery life seems absolutely fine.

This issue was discussed on the TWiT network and they basically came to the conclusion that there is no problem with Windows 7 ruining battery life, it's just that it's reporting is MUCH more accurate and that's causing people to react stupidly.

I tried out Windows 7 on a new hard drive. I wasn't impressed. I reinstalled Vista on the new hard drive, and am quite happy. I didn't like the Windows 7 interface. And Windows 7 has restrictions against audio recording, specifically recording internet audio streams, or any recording via the signal going to your computer's speakers. Vista doesn't.

Problem was the old Vista install had gotten mucked up, and was loading slowly. But I wasn't ready to lose all the sign on stuff, etc. So I just did an install on a fresh hard drive. Now Vista runs like a charm (after disengaging the UAC, etc.)

You might want to do the same with a new hard drive. Since it's an upgrade, you would need to load Vista onto it first. Then the upgrade. I guess.

Windows 7 does have some pros, particularly that it installs fresh really fast, like in an hour.

Nothing wrong with having a backup hard drive with your OS on it. Laptop drives are dirt cheap these days. And then if you need to for software reasons, or whatever, you can always pop in your Vista or 7 drive.
