I'm going to Tokyo at the end of my contract in March and despite massive internet searches, am unable to find a great place to stay.

Any tips? So far I've already exhausted Lonely planet, hostelworld and trip advisor. Everything in our price range ($60 - $100 for 2/night) is either full or has terrible reviews! I should also mention that we're a married couple and would prefer to room together, although we have considered capsule hotels.

Any first hand knowledge you guys have would be great!

All the best.

You could try Toyoko Inn. We stayed in the small double room and it is small but has everything you need. The price includes breakfast and they are conveniently located (we stayed at Ikebukuro). If you get a membership card you can get 30% off on Sunday night (which is more than the cost of the card) and holidays and 20% off on Monday. Cost is about 8-9000 yen per night. Rooms and simple and clean, quiet and comfortable.

If you want something cheaper have a look at the kangaroo hotel. I haven't stayed there but it gets good reviews but rooms are really tiny and it is shared bathrooms.

This is the cheapest place I could find:

http://www.newkoyo.com/

I paid 2700 yen for the medium-sized single. It's not a central location in the east end, but if you want some place cheap that's not a drawer, this is it.

It's an okay place. The rooms are clean but old, and there are only two showers, though they're clean. The bathrooms are kind of scary, I tried not to use them. I'd go back there again.
