I see so many people littering in Korea. From cigarette butts to wrappers
to just about everything. On their side there are practically no waste bins.
So what are people supposed to do? I have to admit when I have
something gross, like some Korean food or something, and there is no
place to trash it, I will litter to.
And then I think, if I was in a proper country, would I do the same thing?
Or, would I hold on to it and put it in the trash later. I really don't know
any more. |

| I don't litter anywhere. I don't care if I have to carry around a greasy container wrapped in napkins in my bag, I will never intentionally befoul the planet. However, whilst camping, I am guilty of tossing apple cores and such into the woods, but I don't think that counts. |

One day the people of the world will be mining landfills b/c most of the resources will be gone......LOL.
Someone should make an Ipod App that can locates the nearest location to properly dispose of garbage. |

One important reason that there are so few trash cans in public places is that psychologists have found that people are more likely to litter when there are garbage cans around.
It would seem logical that garbage cans reduce litter, but, actually, it has been found that they encourage people to throw garbage on the street because there is often litter around them that has been blown out by the wind or tossed in carelessly, making the area look unclean.
When the area is already dirty, people feel that it is okay to throw more garbage on the street.
When psychologists and urban planners did experiments where they put garbage cans in some areas, and did not put them in others, the areas which had garbage cans always had more litter on the streets.
Another reason is cultural. In Korea, it is considered bad manners to eat while walking, so people are less likely to throw food wrappers on the ground.
A third reason that there are few garbage cans is that people are worried about terrorism. After the "war on terrorism" started, people became worried that terrorists might put bombs or other weapons in them, so the number of trash bins was reduced. |

Feel all nice and superior now?
BTW, good job joining in on the behavior of those "beneath you." |

I didn't mean it like I was superior. They just don't speak a proper language
like English or something. That's why we're here, right? |

Wow! Can't believe you wrote that!
This thread is going to turn into "one of those threads" where people are going to "put you in your place" and show you what a bad attitude you have. |

| I never litter on purpose, but one time I was walking and eating something and the wind blew the wrapper off and I didn't bother to chase after it. So a young Korean lady who was walking near me started huffing and puffing and tsk tsking me as she bent over and picked it up herself and carried it to a trash can. I just thought "psssh, there is no WAY you would have cared enough to do that if I were a Korean guy." |

| I always hold on to litter even if it means having to take it home with me. There's absolutely no reason to litter regardless of where you are in the world. |

| I litter all the time, but I try to do it in "polite" ways by, for example, putting coffee cups in a corner where it's out of the way and won't get blown around by the wind. I'll hang on to wrappers because I can put them in my pocket. As for apple cores and other natural things, I throw them into nearby vegetation. |

| I litter in Seoul, because there are no garbage bins. But I don't do it maliciously, I usually just chuck something into the piles of garbage stinking up the curb. I used to live in Hongdae, to give you a picture of what I mean. |

A lot of things have been taken away using the excuse/cover of potential terrorism. There are other motives behind reducing the number of trash cans. For example, the less trash cans, the less trash cans to empty out, which reduces costs for the city budget. |

But they have to hire more people to clean the streets, no? |
