PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti Haitians piled bodies along the devastated streets of their capital Wednesday after a powerful earthquake crushed thousands of structures, from schools and shacks to the National Palace and the U.N. peacekeeping headquarters. Untold numbers were still trapped.
It seemed clear that the death toll from Tuesday afternoon's magnitude-7.0 quake would run into the thousands. The Roman Catholic archbishop of Port-au-Prince was among the dead, and the head of the U.N. peacekeeping mission was missing.
International Red Cross spokesman Paul Conneally said a third of Haiti's 9 million people may need emergency aid and that it would take a day or two for a clear picture of the damage to emerge. The United Nations said the capital's main airport was "fully operational" and open to relief flights.
Aftershocks continued to rattle the capital of 2 million people as women covered in dust clawed out of debris, wailing. Stunned people wandered the streets holding hands. Thousands gathered in public squares to sing hymns. |

I'm glad the International Community is helping, too. But it is terrible news. |

This is especially tragic since Haiti is the poorest, most corrupt, inept, irresponsible, uncoordinated, undeveloped, unintelligent country in the western hemisphere. Let us pray that Haiti will recover from this most recent chaos. |

I was there numerous time in the early 90s while in the military. I was a peon E-5 & my only job was to help unload C-130s and C-141s filled with palates stacked with MRE's and bottled water.
It was weird in the sense that old buildings and the grid of the city belied the chaos on the ground. |

It's unimaginable. The president said between 30,000 and 50,000 are dead. Other reports put the toll ten times that high. One-third of the population of the whole country personally affected. Awesome tragedy. |

One of the most callous reactions to the Haiti disaster thus far has come from televangelist Pat Robertson, who told viewers of his Christian Broadcasting Network on Wednesday morning that he knew the real reason for the quake: The country's long-standing pact with Satan. |

Pat Robertson is now saying this tragedy happened cause these people don't share his religious views. Actually most Haitians are Christian but many also practice voodoo which isn't like people think it is. |

Pat Robertson stated that they made a pact with the devil when Napoleon III was in power. It's news to me that Napoleon III was in power in 1804 or so. Obviously, Pat Robertson doesn't have common sense or a proper knowledge of history. |

Actually Voodoo is indeed the dominant religion of Haiti.
And Pat Robertson is not the first to link the country's problems to its practise of vooddoo: many islanders themselves have been saying so for years.
Check, for example..:

I played a mental game with myself. I wondered how far into the thread that someone would blame the US for Hati's woes. Junior didn't let me down.
One good thing is that the western world has sent aid and lots of it. I think Canada was there in under 24 hours. America the same. Kudos to us. |
