Good afternoon,
Is it illegal for a school to NOT offer severance? I've been offered a place with a sweet monthly salary (much better than my last contract) but they say there is no severance available. I'm tempted to sign because the total monthly salary significantly exceeds the wages (including one months severance) I earned all last year.
Then, I guess if the job doesn't work out then I won't have to worry about hanging on for the severance?
So, is severance a legal necessity, or just an incestive for us to finish our contracts?
Thanks,
Have a good weekend : ) |

What you are calling severance is called "retirement pay" by the Ministry of Labor.
It is not optional. It is not an incentive for you to complete your contract.
But, who cares! If the annual pay is more than at another job, even with severance, then go for it. Just don't let them push you into doing favors, like working overtime for no extra money, because of your "high" salary.
Plus, if you want to be a cheeky bastard, you could actually hold them to their legal responsibility to pay up later (as long as you finish a minimum of one year).
Make sure you ask about pension as well! |
