Has anyone been to the Perhentian Islands? I have been looking into this area and it looks gorgeous but I was just wondering what the prices are like to stay/eat there and if it's worth going to. And where is the best place to stay on a strict budget?

It has been a couple years, so I don't remember the prices off the top of my head. Food was costlier than it was on the mainland, I remember that much. I think I spent around 40/day when I was there, and I was in some medium sized bungalow with no A/C. I stayed on the opposite side of the island from Long Beach. I wouldn't stay on Long Beach because it is a lot busier and crowded than other parts of the two islands. On the other hand, if you like to party, then perhaps you should stay there. Alcohol is also pricey since the islands are in a state that is rather conservative.

The islands have great snorkling and diving. Wide variety of sea life. They also have a serious number of mosquitoes, so if you go, be sure to bring repellent.

Man it's been so long, ten years. I recall there being a party part, and a more relaxed area to go to. Consider Tioman Island as well. I stayed on the beach opposite from the mainland, a very sweaty hike to get there even though there are boats. It was like paradise, hardly any tourists but there is likely to be a resort there now. Try using some online travellers forums like LonelyPlanet for the current low down.

I'm definitely not looking to party there. I just want a gorgeous secluded beach with good snorkling!

Good snorkling is easy to find & do there. Secluded beach is more of a challenge. I think you might want to look into going to the bigger island for that.
