For a research project I am doing:
How much do recruiters charge schools? I have heard 50% of one month's salary of the teacher.
What is the distribution of ESL teachers in Korea? Maybe something like 50% public school teachers and 50% hagwons?
Any sources you could point out would be gladly apprectiated, since I need to source my material.
Thanks all. |

You aren't going to find credible sources just estimations.
I must say that it sounds like you should rethink your research topic. Sounds as lame as it can get. |

If you can find some way to get the statistics from immigration, that should give you a clear and reliable indication. In fairness, I've heard of lamer research topics. |

Recruiters charge schools 1-2 million won, but many recruiters also get away with charging "fees" to teachers, especially South Africans. MOST legal teachers in SK are hagwon teachers and ALL illegal teachers are hagwon teachers. Big difference.
ANY reason why you would need to know this? Thinking of becoming a recruiter? |

It's for a class I am taking and for personal interest.
Incidentally, I found out that Footprints Recruiting has grossed almost $1,000,000 in the last year - that peaks my interest. But since they have a staff of about 10, maybe that isn't so great.
I have heard that recruiting fees are typically 50% of one month's salary, but I just want to verify that.
Thanks for the replies everyone. The immigration stats are a good idea; I will look into those. |

I know that EPIK and SMOE pay only 900,000 won for a public school placement teacher in the big cities such as Seoul and Busan and Daegu Daejon etc.
For that they expect the recruiter guarantees the the teacher for 9 months to replace or refund if they leave. The recruiter also has to pay for collection at the airport if needed and often for a number of other smaller costs such as courier fees.
Apparently EPIK placement for the other provinces is 1 million- with the same conditions to the recruiter.
Most hagwons pay 1- 1.2 million won a teacher and demand a guarantee for 3 months if they leave
I have read in the EPIK newsletter update online that there are now approx 5000 teachers in public schools in the EPIK program as of 2009 and in 2003 there used to be only 369.
This shows the huge increase of numbers in the last few years and government policy.
All newspaper articles from Korea show approx 15,000- 17,000 E2 visa workers. Why not search the Korean media online and the EPIK/GEPIK website to get these statistics? |

I just saw the document that my recruiter had my PS sign. It said they made 1.2. I also know that at my hagwon job I got a year ago, the hagwon paid 1.5. My wage for the PS job will be 2.2, and my wage at the hagwon is 2.1. |

ALL illegal teachers are hagwon teachers. |
Silly and false.
A very small number of teachers have taught in SK with fake degrees, for example. They have taught and been caught at hogwans, private schools and public schools. |

Thanks everyone for the great information. Anything else you would care to share about the recruiting industry would be great. |

1.3 -1.7 million Won, with the higher end relating to SPECIFIC teacher recruitment (i.e. must be from Ivy League, must have MEd, etc.) |

To clarify, seems a public school would not knowingly hire someone illegally. Hakwons certainly do, did and will. |
