I'm curious what a English teacher gets paid here. Are the Hogwans the only places that hire? Are there different levels they base the pay on? For example, is there a difference (as seen in hirability) between an English grammar teacher and an english conversation teacher, or are they all combined? I'm thinking of becoming a teacher here and really want serious answers. Thanks.

Haha, nice title.

Average would be 2.2Mil a month, I'd say.

Generally it works like this:

The further away from Major cities like Busan you get (except Seoul), the more you tend to get paid.

The more experience you have, the more you get paid.

Level 3
This is JUST a degree qualification, nothing else.
About 1,800,000 - 2,100,000

Level 2
Either a degree in education specifically or Level 3 + Teaching certificate of 100+ hours, 1 year of teaching experience or a Masters degree.
About 2,000,000 - 2,200,000

Level 2+
All of level 3 and 2, I think this is an upgrade if you stay with a school for a second year.
About 2,100,000 - 2,300,000

Level 1
2+ years of experience and all of the above, including the contract renewal of the same school.
About 2,300,000 - 2,500,000

Again these aren't Gospel, since I'm starting off with 2,200,000 and only have a Music degree, but that's the general image.

If you're with SMOE - Seoul metropolitan office of education - I think you get paid cosiderably more, because Seoul is a snobby place. Probably about 2,700,000+ at the best level 1 kind of area.

By the way, 2 million is about 1100 or $1741.

Oh, and you're looking at more pay at Hogwarts than Public schools. Not sure about Universities.

Awesome answers, thank you. Are the figures posted before or after Korean taxes? How long can you effectively stay in Korea as a teacher; considering visa renewals? Is that a difficult process?

The answers are (in the same order):

Before Korean taxes.

As long as you can get a job.

No. It's dead easy. The actual process takes about 5 minutes...although waiting your turn can be another story.

In Korea, a English teacher makes the same as an English teacher.
