My home town. It's a fairly lefty newspaper but the city's largest.
The pieces so far look a little like Arirang TV, with some pretty fulsome praise for Korea based on the two days or so the reporter has spent here to inform his opinions. |

Actually he is doing what a new arrival does: post his wonderment as he experiences Korea for the first time.
His article on Seoul was bang on in many ways...namely public transit. |

He's half right on the chopstick bit. I believe they've used metal chopsticks well before Japan's take over. At least the royal family did, for a similar reason mentioned in the article. |

Especially in the context which he chooses. Bashing Martimers for being scared to leave their home town without referencing the disproportionate number of Martimers teaching English in Korea while he is in Korea?
I don't know, reading his articles annoys me. There should be a Journalism 101 rule about not reporting on a country you've never been to before when you haven't even been there a week. Everyone is in a honeymoon period at that point. It's sad that foreign press never really dives into South Korea in the same way it dives into Japan or China. There is a lot going on here the world should know about but I guess SOUTH Korea just really isn't that interesting.
It'd be nice if the journalist in question speaks to more English teachers and does some investigative work on what us "coddled" Maritimers are doing over here and what we're experiencing. |

which are a drop in the bucket compared to the overall population in Canada and there are plenty (especially from the older generation and government) that make a big deal out of how many maritimers are having to move across Canada to find work. There are also plenty of vocal people who make a big deal out of wanting the government to bring the jobs to them, no matter where they are.

It probably annoys you because he isn't a miserable malcontent. You feel uncomfortable because someone is actually enjoying something you loathe and everyone should feel like you. Don't worry, there are many that feel like you. Maybe you can form a club.

While this is a bit harsh...it is also bang on. Well said.
Also, maybe people can grasp the subtle yet obvious difference between a VISITOR and a FOREIGN WORKER in Korea for a year or more. One is there for a brief period and usually with a positive outlook. The other works there and hence has bad and good days. Different perspective.
Still, his articles will rub some people the wrong way here because well...these are the professional malcontents....form a club indeed. |

They're not a drop in the bucket compared to recent University graduates from the Maritimes. You know your province has problems when nearly all of it's Maritime-born graduates leave shortly after graduating. You know you have a big problem when a portion of those graduates end up in South Korea teaching English not for fun or adventure but because they have massive loans to pay off and there aren't many other good ways to do it.

Hmm... I don't know what I said that would make you think I was a 'miserable malcontent'. There are a lot of good reasons to like Korea and I applaud people who can live happy lives here while recognizing that I'm not one of them.
I just think he is writing a movie review after only watching the opening credits. That's all.
I'd also like to add that while I have become "discontent" about living in Korea within the last six months, I did manage to find another job in another country before I started hating the place. According to my plane ticket and work visa, I'm off in six days. A lot of the haters and whiners don't realize that they should probably leave. I got a new job the second I realized I was beginning to dislike the place.
