I'd never do it, but I remember that it was common for teachers of after school programs to do it.

Is it still happening?

That is really stupid if people do it. One time a school thought they deposited money into my account that was supposed to go to another teacher. So, I gave them my bankbook. They updated it to see exactly how much I received.

Maybe you are confusing the ATM card with bankbook. They can't do anything with bankbooks. Whenever I tried (with 4 banks), they always required me to present my ARC card.

Well, let's go shopping then someday. I would love to see the look on a Lotte Mart cashier's face when you hand them a bankbook Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Talk about riots.

You can use the bank book at the bank and at some ATMs instead of your ATM card. I've done it. And I've never been asked for my ARC except when they first opened my account.

But do you have a PIN number then?

If someone took my ATM card, they could just go to a store and sign pretending to be me. They wouldn't need a PIN number. That's the point I was making.

So let's say you don't want to pay taxes on all the money you make from your after school program. Here's what you do:

1) Get your Foreign Teacher's ATM card, PIN, and account number.
2) Receive 200 from each parent. Wait until you collect it all. Deposit in FT's account.
3) From the FT's account, by way of other legitimate business, pay your facility, your staff, and yourself.
4) Leave enough cash in there to cover your FT's contract.

Now, if anybody asks, say you only charged 100 for the program. By that time, your FT will be gone, and any forensic action on the account will be moot. For all you know he was a dirty druggie working illegal privates, that's how he made all that cash.

And that's what you tell Revenue Korea if they ever come knocking.

ChilgokBlackHole,
From everything I had heard, your step-by-step sounds about right.

I knew of an Aussie that had been doing the afterschool program at a public school near me. GREAT pay and hours, with the downside being that he had to open a bank account and give his ATM card and PIN#. He didn't mind it at all! He's been gone now for two years, but I wonder if that bank account is still "active".

Who knows what kind of funny business it's being used for now...

I know that the handing over of the ATM and PIN was very common a couple years ago, for the afterschool program. I wonder if it's still happening?

I would REALLY like to hear about a teacher clearing out the account of ALL the funds in the last month, and saying "see ya!"

If they can do it with one teacher, why not do it with 2, 3, 4, 5, etc...?

So, if one teacher is nearing the end, you just have money go into another teacher's account. That way the teacher leaving only gets paid what they are owed, unless you want to screw them.

I wouldn't. That's all we need for even tougher restrictions...because then in addition to being regarded (in some quarters) as AIDS riddled skirt chasers we're also going to be seen as thieves.

I think we have enough black marks as it is.

Thieving the thief. What's wrong with that? Nothing.

It's your bank account and money someone has deposited for whatever the reason. I'd donate it to UNICEF. It'd be 100% tax deductable.

Heard a story that it did happen, and yes the foreigner was the bad person because the program then couldn't pay the Korean teachers.

I think that at a basic level stealing from criminals isn't wrong. Obviously if they are serious criminals, it is bad for your health.

Really if they want your bankbook/card/pin it's time to run.
