|
|
Okay, I mentioned this before, but now it sounds like it's going to be a long 4 weeks till the end of my contract. A new Principle has come to my school and has implemented "strict' policies. I'm only here for 4 weeks so wasn't going to fuss about the 9 hour days, but now the word is we might have to start wearing uniforms (matching suits, ties, etc).
My GEPIK contract states,
Article 7 (Work Hours)
1. Employee shall work eight hours per day including lunch hour for five calendar days per week from Monday to Friday....
My question:
Would GEPIK consider the 1 hour lunch break to be PART of the 8 hour day or SEPARATE? Is it just up to the individual school?
The school is trying to tell us now that they are putting it separate...magically, before it meant included. Funny how vague Korean contracts can magically change in Korea (even in GEPIK Public Schools)
Would you complain or just deal with it for 4 weeks? I'm only going to be teaching 15 classes a week, the hours are just spread out between 8:30 to 5:30. |

Don't fall for it. The contract clearly states that your lunch hour is included in that eight hours.

If the principal decides it means something different, tell him you're going over his head and that you're quite familiar with the English language. |

Again, if anyone is starting a GEPIK Public Elementary school position in Late March, please private message me to make sure this isn't your school. The past year was awesome - awesome bosses, coworkers, etc, but now I think it's going to take a giant twist. |

All teachers...well, he hasn't said the uniform part yet but a Korean teacher said he made everyone do it at his old school. Hopefully the rule will be implemented after I leave in 4 weeks.
That's the thing....it's just 4 weeks but it just ticks me off. I don't know if it's worth causing a stir or just staying quiet. God, I really don't want an extra hour of deskwarming for a month. |

If you can't get out of it, why not call him out as the big jerk he is? It's not going to hurt you in any way if you are leaving. He is breaking the contract. It clearly stating 8 hours "including" lunch. Including means including. It doesn't mean "lunch is separate add an hour on at the end of the day". Even if you do pull up sticks and leave at 4.30, what can he really do? |

Is this something that should be brought up to GEPIK? Something to ask them about?
I tried searching through the threads for GEPIK contact info but can't find it. Anyone know who I should talk to and how to get hold of them? |

Okay, does everyone agree that our contracts stating "8 hour work days including 1 hour lunch) means that the 1 hour lunch is included in the 8 hours? I'm going to bring it up to them today, I just want to make sure there's no way for them to trap me.
Any ideas? |

Contact your Gepik coordinator. You should have one for your city/region area. That's probably the safest best. |

Turns out only the Foreign Teacher is supposed to stay 9 hours...and not all foreign teachers, they decided this rule only applied to me because they wanted to schedule late after school classes....YEAH RIGHT.
I'll let you know how it goes this afternoon. |

What does the Korean say? The English text doesn't matter does it? |

The English matters, unless you signed your name in Korean. Many would argue the contrary, but as we speak and read English, we will go with what the English says.
You're leaving, so don't let it get to you. Just smile, say yes, and leave at 4:40. |

I'm not sure what the Korean says. But it is the standard GEPIK contract. Anybody know? Since I've never ever heard of a GEPIK teacher not getting lunch included in the 8 hours, I'm going on a limb and calling Bull Sh*t on the school.
Now I just need the guts to say it. I'll wait till the end of the day. |

The standard GEPIK contract states that the governing language of the contract is Korean. |
