Can't wait to use this 'political debate strategy' next time some gun nut starts braging about how many uzi's he owns.

Proud Libertarian here. BTW Libertarianism is not one concise philosophy. There are more right-wing and left leaning Libertarians. |

When the apocalypse comes, and people like you are slaughtered by the truckload, the "gun nuts" will have the last laugh. |

& how does being a Libertarian equate to being a gun nut? I simply do not think the government should control me, and that includes the right to own a firearm. I know quite a few Libertarians and they are far from being gun nuts like some of the right-wing people I think you are imagining. What is more scary than gun nuts is a government which has complete and absolute control over its population.

Libertarianism in one lesson- HBO's Deadwood. No/Minimal laws, but there is still order. Maximum Freedom=Maximum Opportunity=Significant Risk.
That's the trade-off.
I lean libertarian, it has its limits, but overall I think people would be amazed at how stable society would be if we got rid of 90% of our regulations.
The only problem is that in the Technological Era you have to have some sort of regulation or else pollution/contamination would just be rampant and deadly.
The answer to every problem and conflict and injustice is not always a law. |

Libertarianism is a pretty seductive philosophy, honestly, but understanding that most people would be worse off rather than better off in such a society is sufficient to resist its siren call.
We need some regulations. Companies shouldn't be able to lie about their products, and should be forced to list their ingredients, place of manufacture, and so forth. Roads, education, etc should be provided by tax dollars. Programs which aid the poor to a reasonable degree are a good thing. A reasonable amount of energy subsidization with regards to heating is a good thing during the cold months in certain parts of the country. The list goes on: there are lots of things the government does that it should do. Libertarianism would involve giving all of that up. |

Ok Sir: http://www.laughatliberals.com/blog/archives/2004/short-jokes-about-liberals/
haha
* I don't have anything against liberals. In fact, socially I am left of many of them. I am just fiscally conservative, so neither party was for me as I cannot stand the religious right and the big government crowd on the left isn't for me either. I just don't like being referred to as selfish and self-righteous. |

Ayn Rand gives play writers a bad name.
But I do admire the philosophy of Peter McWilliams. I bought his book, Ain't Nobody's Business if You Do: The Absurdity of Consensual Crimes in Our Free Country, at a yard sale once but ended up sending it to a friend on the left coast, a real fan (re: Libertarian) who begged for it when he found out I owned it. He even paid the UPS shipping.
Every page has a pithy quote at the top. Jeffersonian in nature.
There's a couple episodes of Mad Men where they mention Rand's books. Mostly in the first season, I seem to recall. Bert recommends it to his executive staff. I think Rand was a nutcase. Don't even get me started on Objectivism. |
