The British Academy Film Awards have selected The Hurt Locker over Avatar for best film. Avatar, the biggest grossing film in history, picked up just a couple of awards in smaller categories, Production Design and Visual Effects.

What do you think about this? I have not seen Avatar and probably won't because I hear that the story is pretty thin. I've seen The Hurt Locker. It's good, but not good enough to claim best picture I think. Platoon it is not. But it was one of the better films of 2009.

Hurt Locker was pretty wicked. Avatar was a visual masterpiece. I can't quite choose one over the other, though, because they seem to me like they should be judged in different categories such as Sci Fi/Action vs. War/Suspense

I was watching with my wife and I was basically able to tell the story ahead of time because it was just Dances with Wolves in space with aliens instead of Indians. Crap movie to be honest.

I didn't think of Dances with Wolves. I just thought about Pocahontas. Then again, I guess Dances with Wolves is a rip-off of Pocahontas (a much better rip-off than Avatar though).

Pocahontas/Fern Gully/Dances with Wolves/The Last Samurai meets Phantom Menace.

James Cameron should have gotten a kick to the head for making such trash

I'm sure many of you have seen this by now

I thought it was great. Take the 3-d away and it's good. take away the colour spectrum and it's ok. take away the effects and it's just a generic fantasy film.

Yes, someone else remembers Fern Gully.

I didn't see Avatar, but I've seen Fern Gully, so I'll pass.

take away the effects and its not even a half decent fantasy film.

if you decide to use something called 'unobtainium' as a plot peice you are letting your audience know that you put maybe 5 minutes into the plot of this film and then got to work on making pretty pictures.

it is not a good movie, it is just some shiny pictures strung together. And that is a perfectly fine thing to aim for. Its quite obviously what people want most out of their entertainment these days. but you can't seriously nominate for any award involving acting, directing or scriptwriting. which is what the british awards focus in on the most.

It's interesting how all of my friends who have seen Avatar have recommended it to me strongly while pretty much everyone in this thread has criticised it.

Maybe my friends don't want to be the only fools that shelled out $17 to see a movie. Laughing

Yeah, all my friends wouldn't shut up about how brilliant it is too. I was really excited about seeing the movie but left extremely disappointed. Even the 3D wasn't that good...compared to IMAX stuff (which is awesome no matter whats on the screen)

the human 3-d scenes i thought were better than the CG stuff..
plot was terrible. Cameron crapped on America with this film...

"i can't go back there, they've destroyed everything".. give me a break

If I was Kevin Costner, I would be pissed i didn't get signed on to this franchise...

Hurt Locker was insane. Great film.

If special FX is all it takes to be considered as a good movie, then Michael Bay's Transformers is a modern classic.
Avatar was a half-decent family movie wrapped up in a very shiny package.
Anyone older than 14 with an IQ in triple digits must surely be able to see past the superficial gloss of Avatar.
I'm amazed that the Oscar folks even considered this as a contender.
