I know that a lot of you are from Australia, so I am hoping for some advice. I am considering eventually moving to Melbourne. I have some good friends there, and really like the place. It has everything I want in a city- good transportation, pubs, coffee houses, music, cinema and art scene, and even beaches!
I have a lot of experience university teaching, both here and in the U.S., but I did not finish my dissertation- so no PhD. I am also in my mid-fifties. Are there work opportunities for someone like me? Of course, I don't expect specifics, just a general sense of things. Thanks. |

What kind of job are you seeking? Teaching? If so, which particular area? I'm in Melbourne now, studying at Melb uni... if you can give me some more info, I can keep an eye out for you [/i] |

Thanks, Waterbaby.
I am interested in university teaching jobs in ESL. If that is impossible, then something related, maybe, arg!, a private institute. I have heard that there is ESL work in Australia, but I never hear much about it. |

A good start, would be to look at TAFE, they have a less formal requirement for staff, yet they are a very professional mob. They do offer ESL classes. Age is not a major factor, mind you with Australia's EEO policy, employment is pretty much guaranteed for all, if you want a job. Best of luck. |

Thanks Sadsac, I'll try to find them online.
Its the "employment pretty much guaranteed for all" part that interests me. My friends there have said something similar. Are jobs that plentiful? Then why are so many Australians here? |

I think that australia and new zealand are both trying to be english learning 'destinations' for people in particular from asia. If you have quals in the field than you should be fine (tesol celta etc. for academies Masters for uni gigs).
Semester beginss in late feb/early march and again july/august. |

Thanks all. I still don't know, with the current exchange rate, why Aussies are here teaching. What's the downside? |

Jobs are not that plentiful... and as someone has already explained, your best bet for an ESL position is within TAFE. But it can be extremely difficult to secure yourself a position within TAFE. I worked for TAFE for 5 years and the job market is highly competitive. And in answer to your last question... I am here because I can save more money in Korea than I can at home. |

About TAFE, what is that, anyway?
Yeah, I know that I can save more here simply because the housing is supplied, and I don't live the way I do there- I can't shop because the clothes don't fit, I don't drive because the public transportation is good and I would be terrified to try! (and I used to be a Teamster truck driver in the States!) I don't eat western food, for the most part. So, yes I save more money here just because of lifestyle.
That's part of the saving equation, the rest is the fact that I pay little in taxes, and I don't have to pay huge sums for health insurance (my sister pays $400 U.S. a month, not counting deductables.) |

TAFE courses are designed for individuals seeking industry-relevant skills that help get you into the workplace faster, upgrade existing skills, or prepare you for further study. It can also be a cheaper option than a 3 or 4 yr degree. You can get credit points from a TAFE Diploma to a Bachelor degree and save tuition fees that way, although it will usually add an extra yr of study on... so a 3 yr degree becomes a 4 yr degree etc. There are TAFE Institutes all across Australia, so if you are thinking of heading to Oz (Melbourne) you should send your CV to the individual HR departments for the TAFE Colleges within Melbourne.
