I was told that once I start my teaching job in Korea I would have my original degree returned to me. I have been there over a week now and I asked the director for my degree today and she said she needs to keep it on file until the end of my contract. I've heard this is illegal but I can't find any concrete evidence online. Can anyone help me? These are my documents and my employer no longer needs them. I have a right to them. It's almost as bad as hagwons who insist on keeping the passports of teachers. Now that I know is definitely illegal! |

Eeeesshh. Never give out your original degree. Give them a notarized copy.
Go to your directors office tomorrow morning and forcefully but politely insist she hand over your degree. She has no use for it and it belongs to you.
I have a feeling you might be in for a world of hurt if they are pulling this crap. |

This is illegal as in theft. It is your degree. Your property. She does not need it on file. Schools do this so the teacher won't do a runner. You asked her for your degree. She refused. Go in tomorrow and tell her you want your degree. Don't lose your temper, but be firm. If she still refuses, inform her you will be heading down to the local police station and reporting her for theft. If she still refuses contact the police.
It is your property she has NO RIGHT to keep it. |

Go into the owner's office or whatever and tell them they forgot to give you the diploma when you got off the plane. Wait there until they give it to you.
I had to do this, and eventually it showed up. Refuse to teach until it is in your hands.
Tell them they can choose which hand to put it in, your left hand or your right hand. |
