I didn't know where to look for this particular question
I'm leaving on Sunday. I may come back in 2011.
What happens to my bank account when I leave the country? I don't plan on closing it. Will it still be open if I don't close it? I want to have the same account when I come back. Would the bank know if I left the country? Would it be closed down due to inactivity? |

Man, I wish you luck, but I'm still trying to figure out what happens to the refrigerator light when I close the door... |

If the balance is zero then they might close it down. I'd keep 5,000 in it. |

Tfunk is right. Your account will have no problems for a few years, even if you don't use it. I don't know how many 'a few years' are, but I had one account I didn't use for over four years, so I finally went to the bank to close it and was suprised to find it still active. I got my 4,600 won out and closed the account. If your coming back in 2011 not to worry. |

If you have money in your account, it is open forever. My mum found a bank statement for an account with about 100 quid in it from 35 years ago... |

That reminds me of Futurama. How Fry wakes up in the future and his account had 3 bucks in it, and now it is worth millions. Pretty much exactly the same situation. |

I found this after a quick search.

If a savings account is left unused for a long period of time _ for example five years _ banks are not legally obliged to return the money to customers, however most do.
Money left dormant in such bank accounts totaled 380.9 billion won, according to the data. Kookmin Bank had 75 billion won in inactive accounts, followed by the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation with 57.2 billion won and Hana Bank, 46.8 billion won. |
As with all Korean news media the reader should beware. |

Thats reminds me.
Anyone know what the Koorim bank is now called? (or if it is still called Koorim bank)? I haven't seen one around anyone.
About 9 years ago, I opened an account there and left with probably 5,000won in the account.
I am back in Seoul, but haven't even seen a "Koorim" bank.
I would like to go there and show them my account number and ID and see if the account is still open and how much money is still there. |

In the U.S. I allowed a bank account to lay dormant and when I went to take out the hundred or so dollars they had used it all up on the monthly maintenance fees. I'd check into that before leaving it. |
