I'm planning to take a 2 week trip to SEA in November. Two countries I haven't been to are the Phillipines and Indonesia. I'm interested in visiting either one, and the airfare from where I am is about the same to each spot. Which would you choose, and why?
What I like:
-food. I'm guessing Indonesia tops the Phillipines in this category.
-beaches. A tie between the two?
-A fun city or two.
-Not jammed packed with tourists in every spot I go.
I realize that's still rather vague but eh, I'm a go-with-the-flow kinda guy. |

The same but different.
The RP is a catholic country with a strong spanish history.
Indonesia is a muslim country with historical ties to the dutch.
The Philippines has lots of great, LOCAL food if you get away from the western restaurants. Calderita, afritada, kanding, adobo of various types, lots of different soup and rice combos. Seafood in abundance in both places.
Sorry for not giving you a definitive answer but there isn't one.
You can achieve your stated goals in both. Go native and get with the culture or go tourist and party your face off or something in between.

Go to Mindanao island in the Philippines. You will get both, Spanish and Muslims historical backgrounds. Davao city is the place to go. |

I found that the Philippines was a nice place to see Koreans and old fat white dudes with attractive young women.
I'm guessing Indonesia will at least have less Koreans, if that is an factor. |

Unless you go to Bali. It seems to be #1 honeymoon spot these days.
If you want to avoid Koreans altogether, Lombok would be a good place. or Puerto Galera or Bohol in Philippines.

Yeah, # of Koreans isn't an issue for me. Not around too many these days. But yeah, if I go to Indonesia, I think I'd skip Bali. More inclined to go to Lombok. |
