I can't surf the internet while I'm downloading bit torrents.

Any suggestions?

I have the most basic internet service. I think my provider is t-broadband.

In your torrent program there should be an option to throttle back your download/upload speed. Set it something that will give a balance between browsing and downloading.

What do you mean, can't? Is there an error message or is it just really slow?

If it's slow, is it network latency or system latency?

If it's the latter, then it's because Torrent software uses a lot of resources and your computer isn't fast enough to multitask. If that is the case, download uTorrent (it uses a lot less resources).

More specifically, I think you should throttle the upload. You likely aren't saturating your download speed (and even if you are, the computer can handle that) but if you are saturating your upload bandwitdth, you can't request pages from servers.

I usually download about 20 at a time. So my speed is usually between 500kb/s and 1 mb/sec.

The pages I request usually time out.

I'll just have to download when I'm not surfing.

I guess I'm not the only one with this problem.

It's not the computer cause I can run plenty of apps at the same time. I think the connection in my new apart is weaker than the last.

Before you give up, throttle your upload speed and see if that helps.

What OS are you running? I had that problem when I first installed Win7 64bit. I had never had this problem before with 2k/Vista. I was using the network driver that came with Win7. Installed the newest one and problem was fixed.

Sounds like your isp is cutting you off when you are using torrents.

If you have utorrent go to options/preferences/bittorrent/protocol encryption/change to 'forced'.

This will encrypt your outgoing packets and may stop your isp throttling you.

If encryption doesn't work, then you could also try choosing a random port at start up options/preferences/connection/randomize port each start. This will help to throw them off the scent. If you have a router (not a modem), you may have low download speeds if you do this because the ports you randomize to may not be forwarded, so if this is the case uncheck the randomize ports. remember your original port number before you do this so you can restore it to that number.

op can you also post your hardware specs, windows version and bittorrent client version please.
