Hi.
My contract has just been renewed with the same school. I have a GEPIK contract.
I have a number of questions related to the new contract conditions etc. I will appreciate it if someone can answer that for me.

1. What benefits am I entitled to with the contract renewal ? I know about the 14 days home leave etc. etc. and that the school provide you with the plane ticket money. I also heard about a 'contract renewal bonus'. Is it true ? Is this 'bonus' apart from the 14 day home leave or is it the same thing ? Where in the contract is it stated about the contract renewal bonus ?
2. What happens should I terminate my contract before 6 months into the contract ?
3. My school told me that the school is not under the authority of GEPIK and that the school makes all the decisions. (I signed a GEPIK contract, teach at a public school within Gyeonggi-do). According to the school, the contract is only a guideline and that the school can do whatever they like. Can someone enlighten me about this, because I am getting scared that the school might screw me over big time.

Sounds like someone is embarking on quite the power trip. Not a good sign that you will be having an enjoyable year at that school.

They can do whatever they like to the contract, but once it's signed - the terms have been set and they must follow the contract.

Can't comment on the other stuff. It's in the contract. Read it and/or post the clauses you dont understand for clarification.

If they paid for your airfare home and back, then you will have to pay some or all of that back. I haven't experienced this, but they are only paying for that because you are agreeing to work another year.

I signed a similar contract. It had the GEPIK template that we are used to, but the school went through a recruiter. This means the school is managing things, not GEPIK. The way I read that is it will be more difficult to resolve issues in your favor. It will be easier for them to replace you, reduce costs, and move on.

I am a bit surprised you are worried after working one year and deciding on doing another year.

Did they say they won't pay for a flight? What exactly are they doing and saying now that you don't like?

As a note, if the new contract period hasn't started, you can both cancel it and you can get another school. I did this last year, and they just processed it as if the canceled contract was nonexistent.

yes.

Here's the bottom line.

While the school DOES get considerable freedom in what they do with you/how you're handled, etc etc (this is why you always see posts here about how it all depends on your school despite all having same/similar contracts)

it can NOT brazenly break the basic framework of the contract.

If the school is indeed a public school it gets the money from the Provincial Office of Education for a native teacher. With the money comes the contract and the stipulation they follow the contract (which is they they can come in and force the schools to have their teachers deskwarm during vacations, for e.g.)

tell whomoever is spinning this nice little fairy tale for you that you stopped believing in the Tooth Fairy a very long time ago.

the key here is whether it is indeed a public school within Gyonggi-do for e.g. There are some schools that are private (in which case they have more autonomy). There are also public schools under special charters or programs that have more freedom from Gepik Suwon HQ. However, even in that instance (special charter/program), they still get their $$$$$ from GEPIK, and for them to use that money they are required to follow the contract with their native teacher.

Should your school want to brazenly break the contract's fundamentals and you take it up the ladder to complain, it's a battle your school will lose a 100% of the time.

(you should also know, (that at least in the past, before the deskwarming edict), most schools would actually interpret the contracts to the NET's benefit whenever some latitude came in. However, there are always some of "those" schools where the complete opposite is true (for a variety of reasons, usually involving a principal on a power trip or playing some kind of prestige game within the educational structure and you're merely a pawn within)
