Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem:
My boss is refusing to pay for my air ticket.
I'm currently working for a school located in Seoul.
I moved here in April 2002, having completed 12 months
in Ulsan. I didn't go back home (Canada) between the jobs.
My boss claims that since I moved straight
from my old school to his, the phrases 'point of origin'
and 'point of hire' used in contract refer to Ulsan, and
not Ottawa.
To make things worse, I also paid from my own pocket for
the visa run. I don't think I'll be seeing that money either (there
is nothing in the contract about a visa run).
I'm prepared to fight hard for this money. I even took a temporary
pay cut because I felt sorry for the guy (at that time student
numbers were indeed low). In a way this could be my fault -
he sees my generosity as a weakness but enough is enough.
I would greatly appreciate if someone could offer tips on
how to deal with this character.

A little difficult to renogiate terms once the contract is signed.
I would have made these arrangements before the E2 visa run. He's kind of got you in a rough position. Did you not ask about the airfare before signing the contract? Did he give you any verbal agreement to pay? If so you could have him there. I would have refused to do the visa run unless my employer put the plane ticket in my hands along with some cash to cover my expenses.
You might not want to start things off on such a bad note but you do have the power to say 'pay me or I walk' chances are he'll pay you but won't be happy about it. You could make more trouble for yourself in the long run.
Best of luck with it whatever you do!

Did you get a return flight reimbursment from your previous school? Were you hired "in country" for both jobs? What arrangemnets/agreements were made with your employers in regard to flights?
Depending on how your present contract/previous contracts were worded will decide your fate.
Still crazy, still here. |
