If a school changes owners mid-contract, do they have to honor the old contract? Things like severance etc.

No they don't. I got caught like this in my first year. If they want you to stay, insist that they provide you a letter stating they will pay severance and airfare. If not, you need to change jobs now, and start again.

If you don't want to stay for another year, you can go home or maybe get a 6 month contract somewhere where they will pay your airfare home. Your original contract is now finished, don't let them try to convince you that you are breaking your contract, as your contract was with the original owner only.
