yeah, maybe..but look at how the SNES gamepad was copied, and also the PS1's first "dual analog" joystick...even the wii uses that basic design for its "classic" controller.

Not the same...The basic gamepad hasn't changed significantly in basic design or control...It's a gamepad and always has been a gamepad; just with gradually more complexity.

The motion controller is a whole new style of control...copied near-exactly by Sony.

I don't care if they're imaginative or not. All I care about is whether or not the games that utilize it will be fun. I always enjoyed the Wii controller; combining it with the better graphics of the Playstation 3 sounds like a great combination to me.

I play video games to have fun; why should I care who came up with what idea first?

+1

I'm a gamer, not a fanboy.

Hopefully motion controls will be utilized better on the PS3. IGN's avg. Wii game - 4/10, avg. PS3 game - 7/10. There are a variety of reasons behind this, maybe even the motion controls themselves, but I still expect good things out of this.

I had a Wii. The Motion was a nice gimmick, but it didn't appeal to me. Seems fun for the first 30 minutes, after that it gets repetitive.

The motions for the games got repetitive also. Don't mention the fact that the response was subpar. Try playing Punchout for Wii using the Motion Controller versus the Gamepad.

I played Tiger Woods on Wii using the controller with the Motion Plus attachment. I preferred using the controller because I could precisely time my swing/hit instead of using the motion controller where the power/slice will be different each time. If I wanted slice a ball to the right everytime I swung, I'd go play real golf.

Where Motion Controls really shine is party based games where you can have multiple people interacting. Its not so much fun playing solo.

The pointer functionality beats the snot out of analog sticks for shooters. Too bad the Wii only has 2 or 3 worth playing.

Very Happy Funny.

Funniness aside, the design has nothing to do with imagination and everything to do with ergonomics and practicality.

Tennis rackets, golf clubs, baseball bats etc. all use the same shape because it suits the swinging action. Coupled with the fact that most people have flexible thumbs, then it's a no-brainer to decide where the main controls should be located.

The difference being that this one might actually work.

Read about the tech before commenting on the design; there are only so many possible permutations on this idea.

Shall we nail Apple because the iphone also has many physical similarities to previous hand-held products of a similar nature?

Speaking of researching the tech...have you heard about Natal? I have no qualms with them, as they are trying to innovative. As a matter of fact, I think Natal looks freaking awesome (and no glowing pink dummy ball). Check the site (especially the demos). I love my Wii but when this comes out my Wii goes up for sale:

I'll reiterate; Sony should be embarrassed. For all you non-fanboys, you are really trying hard to defend the PS3.

I'll believe it Natal when I experience it. MS has been hyping it up for a while now. I'm guessing a similar peripheral could be released for the PC, so I'll just go with that instead. I had a 360 but sold it because I was too afraid of it dying on me mid-game. Really, ALMOST all the games on the 360 I'd be interested in playing (the exceptions being Fable II and DoA 4 *tear*) are available for Windows.

And I really don't think anyone is really trying THAT hard to defend the PS3. People are just stating objective facts. But it seems like you have some kind of bone to pick with Sony which might lead you to perceive these fairly objective statements as damage control. I don't want to get into a huge argument about this, because, like I said earlier, I am NOT a fanboy. This generation, I own a Wii, a PC, a 360, DS, PSP, and (used to own a ) 360. Anything new for any of these platforms is good for me.

Yeah, I only own a Wii (my 5 year old laptop doesn't do much gaming either), but I still say the controller style is fair game. Like I said, Sony was I think the first to do the dual analog control stick, but no one really capitalized on it for FPSs until Halo - and now EVERY console fPS uses that scheme. It's a copycat industry....get over it.

If someone pops out a quality Motion based one hit one kill sword game then I'll I'll think about picking one up.
Right now the only motion based sword games on the horizon are Red Steel 2 (guess they didn't want to lose all the good will from the first one and start a new series) and the next Zelda (...eventually). If Sony gets some developer to hit that niche well I'll consider it. Presently playing Bushido Blade 2 on my PSP

But yes, definitely a bit of a band-wagon-jump.

This is true. Metroid Prime 3 really won me over to the idea of shooters using this system.
