I'm Canadian, in my early 40s, and have very distinct memories of him leading Labour into electoral battle against Thatcher in whatever election that was. He kind of melds in with the miner's strike and the anti-nuclear platform as emblematic of left-wing British politics of that era for me. |

Yes 1983 election and "the longest suicide note in history". The miners strike came after he stepped down after getting badly beaten in the election.
Still, love or hate his politics, I think his character calls as a refreshing contrast to the slick politicians who seem to be in charge these days. |
