Hi all! I'm hoping someone can help me with my pension issue. I finished my contract in February and applied for my refund no problems. Now I've received an email from the national pension service saying they can't release my refund until my school confirms I've left. They said they have tried several times but the school either doesn't answer to confirm or evades the subject. They asked me to call the school and I received similar responses. Any suggestions? Are there ways to claim it still if without a confirmation from the school? I left two days after my contract. Any help would be great. Thank you! |

Strange. Why would they do that? There's really no benefit to them to do this. Do they have a history of being difficult? |

Did that message come from the pension office covering the area where your old school is or from the national office? All that really matters after you've applied for the refund is that Immigration confirms to the Pension HQ that you've left the country and have not returned. |

I agree with you,but when I called the pension office to ask about the process the operator said after all the regular paperwork is filled out that the school has to call them(pension office) to confirm I left the country. I called the pension office back to re-confirm this with another operator, but she said the pension office calls the school to confirm I left the country. A poster on this site claimed that the pension office only calls the school to see if all contributions have been made on your account. You tell me which one is correct? |

Your old school won't know if you've left the country for sure. Only kimmi can be sure. Pension person should contact the immi. |

What you are saying makes sense, but I am getting three different answers and the poster is getting a different answer. I guess you have to pick one. |

The correct procedure is:
- You go to the Pension Office for your area and complete a form stating the date you're leaving Korea, showing proof of your transportation out of Korea (plane or ferry ticket, for example), and indicating your choice of the following for the funds in your pension account:
- Money transferred to your bank account in Korea (IBK is a popular choice as they will iimmediately issue you an ATM card you can use outside of Korea to obtain your money from that account).
- Transferred to a bank account in your home country.
- Transferred to your home country's equivalent of the pension account.
- The Pension Office sends a report at the end of its reporting period to Immigration listing all those who have claimed redemption.
- Immigration responds to that report with verification that you have not returned to Korea for employment after your departure date.

Yes,that makes sense, but the poster is being told the same thing I was by one operator. I am being told a different thing by another operator and finally a veteran poster that knows his/her stuff is claiming something different. Which is correct? That is the million dollar question. |

Thanks for the responses. My school has been difficult with absolutely everything! It changed names and management two weeks after I left but is still under the same owner. My guess is they have a lot going on and don't really know what to do. The email came from nps but they didn't mention checking with immigration that I've left.
I was wondering if I applied for the overseas remittance if they could bypass my employer if he won't cooperate. I've looked into it a little but I don't know if I can because I already applied within korea and I don't know if the process still involves my employer. |

Who did the e-mail come from, the local or the national NPS office? If local, refer everything to the national office. If national, then reply that you've turned in your ARC on your way out of Korea and Immigration is fully aware that you have not returned to Korea to work. Keep going up the chain until you get someone who knows what they're doing. |

They need proof that you left the country, that is all.
Copy plain ticket, fax it e-mail it whatever. |

When you leave, you submit your ARC at immigration. This cancels your visa. If you are still in Korea, good luck on your attempt. |

I agree along with you and the other posters, but question remains why is this person (poster) being told the pension office has to call to confirm this information from the school. I am being told this same information also, but I have 3 months before I leave. Answers? |

Hi Rick,
I am surprised that this is happening to you and I am sorry you are going through it. I do have a little experience with this and would like to share it with you.
A little over 2 years ago, I switched from the national pension to a private pension. So, I found a loop hole in the system that enabled me to get the money back even though I was still going to teach in Korea. Here's the thing.
I called the local pension office and they told me that I needed to show that I was leaving the country. Then, they'd call immigration to see if in fact I had left. So, I printed out my airplane ticket, but, only the outgoing ticket, not the returning ticket. Afterall, they only said if I was leaving; they never said if I wasn't coming back!
So, I went to the office, filled out the paperwork, and submitted my outgoing ticket itinerary (and copy of confirmation). Well, 3 days after I left, immigration did receive a call and they did confirm that I indeed had left the country. Approximately 9 days later, I had a rather LARGE sum deposited into my Korean account. Upon returning 3 weeks later, I transfered the money home.
Now, I only have to worry about my private pension, which, will be sent home when I leave. That's how this private pension scheme works here.
I am rather surprised to hear that the school must confirm your leaving the country when the pension office, for me, called immigration and checked. Immigration does know that information while your employer doesn't.
I hope this helps. |
