|
|
A friend and I will be in Korea from July 1st to July 14th. We want to see as much as possible for as cheap as possible. We definitely want to some naitonal parks, old towns, and also Jeju Island. We have already been to seoul and Busan. We are thinking that some overnight travel to places will cut some costs instead of paying for a room somewhere. Are there any secret traveling tips for places to stay or overnight travels to parks, towns, temples, Jeju island, etc...???
Any help will be great!
THANKS! |

| Sleep at Jinjubangs. They are Korean spas open 24 hours a day. You can sleep in them. They cost between W6000 and W8000, and that allows you to stay in them as long as you want. |

Sleeping at a jimjilbang is dodgy at best. You will be around drunks that happen to have 5,000 to sleep in an open area next to you.
Youre better off sleeping in a train station if you want to go that route.
Overnight travel is rare here. It exists, sure, but during the hours of 2-5am there will be no bus. Just find a love motel (30-40 K won). or take a "camping" trip- bring your own tent |

In some Parks like Seoraksan by Seokcho there are a few climber shelters for 5,000 a night, no bedding available.
Overnight traveling not so much, city buses and subways stop running at midnight. But using cross country buses are pretty cheap and they have night buses, but they never start after midnight or a little earlier. |

Jimjilbangs aren't that bad. I've stayed at them a few times and haven't had any problems. Compared to your suggestion of sleeping in the train station, jimjilbangs are much better... |

| Jimjilbangs can be super dodgy. Took a nap in one and my friend awoke to a guy naked in front of his face... Not a joke. So beware of them. Ive also slept a few hours in a DVD room, just rent the longest movie they have and sleep on the nice couch for 4 hours. Just get a love motel-30k won divided by two and you wont have to worry about your stuff getting knicked or some dude waking you up looking for some lovin. |

Maybe "your friend" fell asleep in one of the gay saunas in Itaewon?
99% of the Jimjilbangs in Korea are not gay at all. And you can just fall asleep and not worry about anything.
I've stayed in them like 20 times. A different one each time and never had a problem besides the occasional drunk guy being loud in the night. |

| This one is sketchy, but If I really have to get some sleep real quick and I am under the influence enough I sometimes crash in PC bangs when I am out of town. 1000 an hour. I am sure people laughed but just keep starcraft laoded and people will think your a pro gamer, not a cheap skate. |

This is a fantastic option, but you should at the very least be verified by the website. Ideally, you should let someone stay at your place between now and July to gain a little trust... Either way, best option by far!! |

| Ive had the same experience sleeping at a jjimjilbang. My girlfriend and I went to a concert, and slept overnight at one near her house together (which definitely was just a normal jjimjilbang her mother and her had gone to together). But we woke up in the night with a weird guy petting our feet a few times. |

It's a pretty safe bet to go with jjimjilbangs. They're usually paired with spas/saunas. The spas/saunas are gender-segregated and very, very naked, though the Jjimjilbang itself (where you sleep) is co-ed and clothed. As long as you're not shy, and you can sleep in public on a hard floor with a crappy pillow and two undersized stiff scratchy blankets, you'll be fine.
As far as transportation, I'd suggest looking into the train system for any major distances you're traveling, if you're going from Seoul to Busan, there are some nice trains that are about 5 hours long overnight, and fairly cheap (~20000 won) http://info.korail.com/2007/eng/eng_index.jsp the web site is in English as well, and has prices and train schedules |
