I recently got married and received my F2 Visa. My hagwon has been screwing me for a couple months now (not paying on time, making me come in on Saturday). I put up with it because I wasn't sure what my options are once I get my F2 visa.
Now the time has come to see what my options are. If I leave (not quit, but give them notice) what happens? I assume nothing because I am no longer "married" to my school with my E2 visa, but I signed my contract with them while on an E2.
I hope that there is an option for me to just quietly leave and find a better job somewhere else.

Give them one month's notice to tell them you are resigning.
If they want to fire you on the spot, they still have to give you one month's compensation. If they don't, you can take them to the labour board. |

And then that's it? They can't try to get money from me or accuse me of breaking the contract? No mark on my immigration record? It's that easy?

One thing though, you did sign a contract with them. It's not like you are bound to them now, but you did take some things as part of the agreement. A flight ticket here being the big one. Legally you need to work for a school for 6 months before you can write off the flight ticket. So if you leave before that, they may have some legal ground to come after you for the ticket (provided you got one).
Schools will also try to play hard ball with you, so you will have to stand your ground...which might mean taking them to the labour board for your last pay check. But ya, it's as simple as Tzechuk said.

I started here in September 2008, then resigned in September 2009. I don't know what is happening. There seems to be the same amount of students. I guess either way you look at it, I've been here 6 months, so I don't have to worry about that part at least.

Yes, it's that easy. Leave tomorrow if you want. The only bad that will happen is you won't get a positive reference. Keep us posted, I'm interested if your boss changes his/her attitude.

Immigration record? Your job has nothing to do with immigration any longer. You are treated like a Korean for work purposes. If you are a teacher you need an f-2-1 (I hope you have one of those or you are illegal) if you have a regular job (non-teaching) then the tax board has to worry about you.
There are no black marks on your immigration record. Give him a month or not. Hell just leave. There is nothing he can do about it.
Story about me. I was getting ripped off, guy threatened to fire me and I said "go ahead". He wouldn't so I threw the school keys at him and said I quit. 5 mins before class, all the students were watching, most students and all the teachers agreed with me. After that more students and teachers quit. I was the catalyst. There is nothing he can do to you. Don't badmouth his school or make him lose $$, he could sue you for that. People with E visas have to put up with this crap. You don't.
Get two part time jobs for 50k an hour and then you are laughing. |

| As has been pointed out, on an F-2 or F-5 there is not a whole lot the Hagwon owner can do. Your spouse owns your F-2 and you own your F-5. Your contract has nothing to do with your visa status at this point. You are also in a much better position than a normal E-2 as you DO NOT have to leave the country anytime soon. You could hang around years and torment your former employer if you so wish. Your spouses family can also put pressure on the boss. If you are being screwed over, stick to your guns. That F series visa actually has a bit of power to it. |

Ok. So I was looking at my contract and it mentions that if I leave, I have to reimburse the school for my airfare ticket. I don't see anything about 6 months. Is that a problem?
There is also something about recruiter fees. If I leave I have to pay recruiter fees. I don't have the exact wording in front of me, but it says something like that.
Is this all really irrelevant now as toadkillerdog said?

Compare your contracts.
Chances are you were given a standard contract.
Did they give you any tickets to go home in 2009? If so, then yes, they have a case there...
As for recruiter, since this is your second contract, I can't see them using it against you- they didn't need a recruiter to find you. You were already there. |

Did a reqruiter find you for them your 2nd contract? Nope. Again they are SOL. Leave. If they mention any of this stuff just laugh at them and say what I said. They have nothing on you. Leave ASAP. If you want to be a decent guy and give a month notice, go ahead, but being decent means they will screw you over in other ways. Get your pay and walk. They have zero respect for you, you have zero respect for them. |

OP -
First, did you receive severance for your initial year? If not, go and collect it for 1.5 years.
Next, inform your employer that you have an F-2 and give the proper notice of termination of your current contract. Suggest that he/she can re-negotiate a new contract with you.
Then, go next door to the closest hagwon to begin part-time work. This step might actually be your first because you are now entitled to seek extra work legally.
The way it works for you now is that you have as much freedom as you see fit. You can check with labor about your situation for some advice concerning your contract. Immigration no longer cares about you as long as your spouse is sponsoring you. |
