Just curious about how vacations work for other teachers at academies.

I am interested in this topic too but I am in an elem PS. Last year in my MS they didn't like me taking time off or leaving the country period (so I didn't). This year I DEF am taking a vacation and will prob go to the Staties when my Sis gets married in September. I need to ask permission since its offpeak though. I don't want to leave them in a bind, but I hope they let me go.

Academies typically take 2 weeks a year off, 1 in Summer and 1 in Winter so no one covers for your vacation as the school is closed. Public schools allow vacation time between semesters and camps must be worked out around your negotiated vacation times.

Substitute teaching is rather rare here, especially in a hakwon. Usually they just combine two classes. Another solution, not as common but sometimes done, is to have the teacher offer make-up classes after the vacation.

To illustrate just how bad the situation is, when I was teaching in a high school, the mother of one of the English teachers died. The guy was absent for 4 days. He spent the next several weeks giving make-up classes.

Next time feel free to travel abroad any time that you have vacation days (or even on long weekends). There's nothing in your contract (or anywhere) that let's them restrict your travel in any way. Make sure to get your multi-entry visa.

Thanks Jon. Yes I should have taken a vacation even if they didnt want me to go, but just the timing and my health were not that good at the time. I also spent winter vaca trying to secure the job I had now after my last job gave me probs. Thnx for the reminder, I will get a multiple
visa for this year.

My only sister is getting married Sept 12th which is when classes will be in session at my PS. Should I ask to exchange that time with my summer vaca, or say that I'll make up the classes. I know they hate when we take leave during school hours but I feel I have to go no matter what. Thnx for any advice, I've never left this country before lol.
