The Marantz SR4600 has seven channels at 80 watts each. The back panel is packed with connectors, and it has everything except HDMI. There are spdif in and out, digital coax in and out, composite RGB, SVHS, etc. It has video switching and upconversion. It has seven channel pre-amp inputs for discrete signals. And it has HDMI decoding for CDs, and a detachable power cord. If you have some older video gear, this is preferable to a receiver with only HDMI video connectors.
For those of you who don't know hifi, Marantz is one of the truly great names, going back to the 1950s. The company has had its ups and downs, but is back in form, providing a superlative combination of quality, value and reliability.
I have owned many Marantz products over the years. For those of you who don't know hifi, but have heard of Denon, Marantz and Denon are under the same corporate umbrella. I've owned both, as well as Yamaha, and I would say Marantz sounds better and is more reliable.
D&M owns Marantz, Denon and McIntosh:

I owned this model and the Marantz PM7200 class A/AB amplifier at the same time back home, and was surprised to find the SR4600 sound was almost indistinguishable in the pure direct mode from the PM7200. The SR4600 has a warm, realistic, natural sound with great stereo imaging and plenty of punch for DVD sound tracks. So I bought another SR4600 two years ago here.
The SR4600 has built in digital processors, unlike the PM7200 or most amplifiers, so all you need to do is run a spdif fiber optic cable from your DVD to the receiver to get fantastic sound - the Marantz does the digital processing. With an adapter to produce a fiber optic digital out from your computer's USB jack, you can have the Marantz DAC process your MP3s, WMAs, FLAC, etc, not to mention DVDs, for excellent sound. This works fine:

The Mission M30i are small but still produce surprisingly powerful bass. They can't perform miracles, but they do sound like much bigger speakers. Part of the secret is in the inner bracing and baffling. They are great for classical as well as DVDs, etc. The sound is clear and natural with plenty of treble, lots of punch and great stereo imaging. You have to listen to a DVD to really appreciate how good they are. A great sound track will blow you away. There are bigger, better Mission speakers, but I find these quite satisfying. If you get a pair of bigger Missions, you can wall mount these as surround speakers.
Mission is an old, respected name in British hifi, and has the same corporate parent as Wharfedale and Quad. Quad was once the Rolls Royce of hifi, and is still top notch.

Don't be fooled by the speakers' small size. They will blow you away. Literally. On deep bass notes, you can feel the flow of air five feet away. |
