I've been told many different things by recruiters as of late. My partner and I are trying to get a position in Korea for about the beginning of July (though our original date was May 1, we wouldn't have our degrees until the third of June).

We're being told by some that hiring for July won't start until May (reasonable enough), and another has told us that he'd love to consider for EPIK . . . in September. Now we're beginning to look at other options, maybe a short-term contract in China, or a camp contract in Korea. Likewise, we could try and just work in Canada until a satisfactory job comes up, but I'm terrified of another unemployed/underemployed summer (as is my partner).

We're looking for advice: is EPIK worth waiting for? Will we be able to find jobs for July if we wait until May? Is it worth it to go to China, taking a bigger risk but starting right away? Are camp contracts worth the travel expense?

I don't quite understand the China card in all this. A summer job would be good in the sense you would get a short term sample of working in Korea. However, it probably wouldn't give you time to travel and appreciate the country

I suggest working at a hagwon or waiting till September for a public school position.

The china thing is kind of a back-up plan . . . if we can't find jobs in Korea, or if we decide to start working right away instead of waiting for our degrees.

There will be camps all over Korea in July / August. They usually run for 4 weeks (sometimes more, sometimes less) but won't start hiring for at least another month or two.

Some camps will pay your ticket over here, too. Good chance to come over and see if you could live here for a year. Some camps take the airfare out of your salary (I know one camp that will pay 2.8million for 4 weeks and take it out of that) and some camps will pay for your airfare, whatever the cost, and then pay you a separate cash salary (eg: airfare + 1.4million).

Usually the camps that will front your airfare don't pay as much as other camps. Then again, those companies (the ones that will pay your airfare) are more well known and reputable, and are not afraid of spending a little cash upfront. You're pretty well guaranteed to get paid with those companies.

Make sure you have all your documents in order and wait to see some advertisements in the coming months.

Do we need to have our physical university degrees, or is this something we could do without having to send our degrees, just our transcripts?

It really depends on the embassy / consulate that you'll be applying through. Each one has slightly different rules....

Contact them and ask them directly.

How would we go about applying for these jobs? I mean, where are the positions advertised?

Everywhere. This site. Other ESL Teaching sites. I've seen a few already but most will start coming in April / May.

Just google English Camp Korea - you might have some luck.
Or PM me and I can send you some contacts.
