I'm wondering if it's possible to get internet and cable for my apartment before my arc comes. I'm going on Tuesday to Immi to drop it all off and wondered if it was possible to get something sorted tomorrow. I'm looking at another weekend inside my apartment with nothing to do and no money to go do anything with anyway. Reliable internet would be helpful as the one i'm booting from now is sporadic. thanks! My korean isn't very good, but i've got a korean friend who could help me out in a pinch for translating.

According to my area coordinator, it is NOT possible to get internet, cable, phone, and bank account B4 you get your Alien Resident Card. The only way possible to get services turned on is if a Korean guarantees and secures it for you and we both don't have anyone stepping up to the plate like that for us. I tried to get a prepaid card phone yesterday, but was told I have to wait until I get my ID card. I understand the cable TV is not worth messing with as you only get one English channel playing old movies you've seen many times. Save yourself $500 inside of a year by not having boring cable and only using internet.

To help myself not be so bored during nights and weekends, I've been downloading shows and movies on my work computer and packing them home on my external hard disk to play on my laptop. I had 100GB of resident hard disk space free and Koreans don't care if you use work computers for personal use as long as you show up on time, be where you are supposed to be, and do your work. Back home, I'd been already fired just for doing personal email and downlaoding.

Funny thing. On my first day I had an unsecured WiFi signal that worked in my apartment, but it stopped working after my first day to my disappointment. I've been using a PC room and sometimes Holly's with my laptop, but Holly's is over priced coffee and PC rooms are too smoky and downright strange.

you can get a bank account without your ARC...i got one before I even got my E2 finalized...Woori Bank. That sucks about the internet though. It's just a pain when I try to talk to people back home and i get cut off all the time. Oh well. here's to finishing my 1200 page novel this weekend!

I also recommend getting a flash drive while you wait to get internet at home. They're pretty cheap here, and you can get something around 4-8gigs for 20-30k won.

i didnt have to show my arc card when I got kt internet

they told me that when the guy comes to install the internet he would take a picture of my arc, but he never did. i just pay the bills so i assume its all good

Cripes, you just got to a foreign country. Go out! Live a little. Your Korean friend will be happy to pay for you for an evening. There'll be plenty of time to waste on the Internet in the future.
