Bahhhhhh. I had so much trouble with this at first.

First off, your criminal background check cannot be local. It must be state or national. Notarize= make available for official domestic use. Apostillize= make available for official international use. Your document must be notarized THEN apostillized. Both.

There is usually only one office in the entire state that has an Apostille. I had documents coming from Utah and Illinois- in Utah, my documents has to be apostillized at the Lt. Governor's office (who knew that they actually did anything?) and in Illinois, they had to be apostillized at the Secretary of State's office.

What state are you in?

Good luck, you'll need it.

it sounds like such a pain the ass. i did find a company in new york that handles all sorts of intertational forms that will apostilize a background check from just about anywhere. all in about a week. the cost is pretty high- about 320 bucks I think. I am trying to be in and out of the US real fast and this may be my best option unfortunately. sacrifice some coin for speed

The regulations say that a federal, state, provincial, or local check is acceptable.

They had BETTER take a local check. I've already jumped through so many hoops. If I have to wait around any longer for a state or federal check i'll just go work at McDonald's instead and say screw it.

You are wrong and right. A local PD can conduct a national and state check. After that has been completed and notarized it can be sent to the State Department to be apostilled. That is how it worked for me. US states are different I'm sure.

So, if you are in Korea, can a family member go to the police station and take the notarized document to Secretary of State and get it apostillized?

Any Secretary of State will do? Or, does it have to be a specific one in the state?

Yeah, they notarize them(at least mine did). Then send them for apostille(whatever your state tells you to send them or just travel there).

If they don't notarize it, you can go to city hall or to a bank(in some cases) for notary services.

ONCE AGAIN, a local check is acceptable to Immigration.

I paid a company back home to collect my background check from the state, have it apostilled, and FEDEX it to Korea. There are companies in the states that can take care of everything for you from obtaining it, to apostilling it, to even getting it translated into Korean. They are quite expensive, but less expensive than a plane ticket back home.

No the police station will not apostille your document. They can't.

Background check....

Option 1: Nationwide Background check for the United States:

A. You need to go to the local police station/fingerprint station/live scan facility in the country you are in and get fingerprinted on a FD-258 card or paper.

B. Sorry to say, but you're out of luck on time. Nationwide background check take a very long time, "allow approximately 13 weeks for processing." There's a way that you can get it earlier, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Contact Apostille Pros @ www.apostillepros.com.

Option 2: State Background Check: If you are short on time, if you are in the United States, you can do a live scan background check. That's only a STATE background check though. Again, you can contact Apostille Pros or go to your local live scan. They have the machine to run the background check.

Option 3: Run a broad background check. All it requires is your social security, name etc. This is without fingerprinting. Depending on the requesting agencies, some might accept this type of background check, some might not. Again Apostille Pros, can do this.

Option 4: Background check obtain through the city where you'd lived. Again Apostille Pros provide this service.

Last if you need an apostille on your background check or crc, well Apostille Pros again. These guys are great. They specialize in this. They helped me and my friend. I highly recommmend them. Just give them a call, they will provide you with information and you can go from there.
