I've read many posts about how Korean hagwons discriminate against African Americans or dark skinned persons. But what about Chinese Americans (though immigrated to America when i was one)? I'm a light skinned Chinese who is seriously considering to teach English in Korea. Will I also have trouble seeking employment because i'm not caucasion? |

I suppose many non English speaking countries have a problem with non "white' looking faces who teach ESL. And of course, korea tops the list in my opinion simply because it's not the "advanced nation" it portray itself to the world.
Yes, you'll have problems but so do white faces! I'll bet that no school will hire an American/Chinese and if they do, they'll offer low money. I have a friend who is Hawaiian/Chinese, born in Hawaii, a Masters from Yale and no korean university let alone a hokwon would hire her! Take one look at her photo and guys go nuts over her beauty. So, looks are not everything and education does not count in korea. Hokwons want a white face; that's where the money is for them. You might find a decent school though! |
