OK, so let me give a little background. I work at a public elementary school, but I'm doing English town stuff (the repetitiveness makes me wanna shoot myself in the head). Anyways, I was wondering if anyone else felt like their Korean co-workers behave like a bunch of high-schoolers with there obnoxious loudness, cliques, and constant trash talking one another?

-Negative Nancie's who want to lecture me, need not apply.

the are definitely immature by western standards. it all starts with how they are brought up. they sit in school/class/academies for 14+ hours a day and never really get to be kids. high school students act like middle school students, middle schoolers act like elementary kids, and well elementary kids i guess would be preschoolers. it seems to me that every age group is at least one behind from a western view. it is easy to see this as well if you have any students who have lived abroad for a school year. all of my students who have lived abroad and came back here act years older than their peers.

So, you've never had a real job back home have you?

Most work places of any measurable size will contain that kind of thing.

No, but it sounds like he's got far more experience than you do.

I did have a job back home, and most of my co-workers were normal adults. Can't say the same for Koreans or the weirdos who come here to teach.

'Cuz most ex-pat bars in Korea look like a model of mature behavior with no whining or back-biting about co-workers, right?

LMAO, I realize it's much too difficult for that to be accomplished in an online forum.

Really, you just wanted to hear stories about how bad Koreans are for the reasons you stated.

Working here isn't that different to working back home, except I can't understand what people are saying half the time.

Back biting, gossip and cattiness are all attributes of many work places.

CAUTION: GENERALIZATION AHEAD. THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS TO ANY RULE.

Koreans follow the herd, they are not encouraged to think independently or creatively. This leads to a lack of self-confidence, because, well...they never have to think or make decisions. They do as they're told / expected to do by the higher-up. All they do in school is memorize facts. There's no critical thinking or creativity.

Koreans lack confidence, thereby showing the immature behavior you see. Confident people don't act that way. I've never worked in a place in Canada where adults act like Koreans do: constantly self-conscious, afraid to be wrong, eager to mock others...

Actually...maybe it's the presence of the foreigner. Maybe Koreans don't act like teenagers when it's just Koreans around? I don't know.

The trolls just want to be fed. Some just want to justify their hatred. If someone agrees with them, it helps them sleep at night.

I haven't worked in a place where that hasn't been true. From the lowest jobs, to tech companies and schools.

Unless you're the boss, almost everyone is afraid to be wrong. mocking others and tearing them down is a national past time of humans in a lot of places including north america.
and most people are not confident. It is why self-help book and motivational speakers do such booming business.
