I'm really surprised that my school hasn't mentioned anything..........

The new teacher at my school has been sent to a 1 day workshop locally.....it would appear that GEPIK (in an effort to cut costs) has done away with the orientation and has replaced it with 1 day's worth of lectures.

Gepik overnight orientations suck balls.

The only thing they are good for is to meet other teachers.

I liked the orientation I went to and think it is a shame if they have scrapped it. Primarily, as you say, because it was good for meeting other people.

Did you like the socialization aspect or did you like the actual seminars/presentations?

The low point for me is when that Korean guy who lived in Kentucky gives a 1+ hour long speech in English. He doesn't really tell you anything useful, he just tells you that Korea is small, has no resources and after 10 mins, I dozed off.

Hmmm....not sure I remember that. I went to the orientation in July 2008....so a while ago. Some speakers were better than others - there were a couple who gave me ideas about how to plan lessons, where to go to on the internet in order to find good resources for lessons. There was a speaker called Darren Ng who, whilst I found him to be a little over the top, did give me some good ideas about how to present to an audience and emulating certain things that he did has, I think, helped me to be a more engaging 'teacher'.

Also, if you're new to Korea I think hearing from some of the speakers who have been here for 10 years or more was actually quite comforting.

Anyhow, that's not to say that some of the speakers didn't suck, and yes the socialising aspect of the week long orientations was great.....especially if, like me, you had spent your first month in Korea wandering around Suwon like Robert Neville in I Am Legend wondering if you would ever have a conversation with somebody who could speak your language again.

Some of the GEPIK Orientations & Field trips last year were cancelled, due to hysteria over Swine Flu.

I went to the 4 day long 2009 orientation, It was painful.

All the useful information could have been presented in one full day or spread out into 2 days.

You're right about the orientation being good for newbies. The problem with the 2009 orientation was that a lot of the teachers weren't newbies. There were lots of vets at these orientations. Guys who've been here for 1 year or more.

Thanks for the info...........

I was hoping to get some new ideas or useful info from from the orientation. Plus getting a few days off work to do it would have been nice!

I heard a rumour that Public school teachers should do on an online course, 1 hour per day..............Apparently my school doesn't want to fork out the 60,000won to do it.............

i'm doing the online course. that is, if i can get registered! just gave up trying to at work, will try to register at home. I really don't know what the issue is. Though, I have to say, I'm not terribly pleased about having to do an online course for orientation. It kinda stinks. At least I don't have to pay for it.
