A question arose in my class for teachers today.
Is there a specific rule for when or why one uses 'in' or 'about' in the following examples or is it, as I suspect, simply personal preference?
I stayed there for a while.
I stayed in there for a while.
('there' being a room)
What I wanted to know was.....
What I wanted to know about was.....
Why do we say 'in'? Why do we say 'about'? |

"In" in the first case emphasizes being inside a place. "About" in the second emphasizes broader or more general information. Beyond that, personal preference, and how economical (few words) your writing and speaking is. |
