Does it work well in Korea?
I'm concerned about servers and ping. Does the U.S. machine try to hook-up with U.S. game-servers, or will it look for the best pings?
Also, does anyone know of a good website to get information on modding the xbox to play backups. I've been searching high and low, but all the information seems outdated (circa. 2007-2008). Yes, I'm aware this will likely cause a ban on MS Live, but I'm just checking the options.
Thanks for any info. |

I can't give you any info about Live, but with regards to modding: it's not that you'll likely get banned, it's that you will.
There was big news about the iExtreme LT firmware that was SUPPOSED to be ban-proof. Except people are now reporting getting their consoles banned even if LT was the first modded firmware they've ever used. MS has crushed every single fw revision so far and seems to be doing so more and more quickly as time goes by. They've gotten super good at mod detection. Kind of like how Sony is on the ball about constantly sending out fw updates.
So you have to decide what's more important to you: Live or the ability to play all the free games you want (by yourself). |

Yes, the second part is kind of connect to the first. If online play is pointless in Korea due to poor ping and lack of servers I won't mind not getting online. |

Live is actually peer to peer, not based on servers. All that's handled through Microsoft is the player matching.
So if you're playing a private game with your friends in Korea i'm sure your connection would be ridiculously good. If you're playing a public game and it looks outside the country for players that's going to cause it to lag. |

I recently switched internet providers for the sole purpose of better lag in xbox games. While the switch was only marginally successful, the problem was never really that terrible to begin with. Get 3 friends here in Korea playing COD:MW2 and likely YOU will be the host in a public game. You can really notice anything more than 50ms with a game like COD (kill cams) and until you adjust it can be a cause of ulcers, insomnia and symptomatic tourettes. Halo plays amazingly, I didn't notice any difference from playing here to when I played it back in the US. Left 4 Dead 2 was unplayable, but that's because the game has some seriously bad net code. Ditto for Gears of War.
The real question to ask yourself is "am I going to play online?" I spend ~75% of my time in online multiplayer. A spot of lag here and there is frustrating but not deal breaking. What I usually do is switch lobbies after each match until I come across a decent host. Takes 3-5 games on average to find a host in Japan, Hong Kong or Korea.
With a Modded xbox you WILL get banned. not worth it to me. And consider that you can buy a new game for 50,000 won and sell it back 2 weeks later for 40,000. I just don't see the point in modding. |

I presume there's a big Korean/Japanese presence online and MW2 etc are always busy? Just might struggle to get together a team that all speak English? |

Does anyone know if they can Jtag an xbox 360 in Yongsan or do they just offer drive flashes. Anyone in Korea have a Jtagged console? |

if you mod your xbox, you will have to do it every so often. and you run a big risk of getting banned and cant use live ever again. i was safe for awhile, bu if you get a game early, or it isnt properly stealthed. you will get banned. i ended up selling my modded xbox and went legit. i make enough money to pay for the games i like. i never played most of my backups anyway. |
