I'm on a GEPIK contract, teaching 24 hours a week. I get extra vacation days for the extra 2 classes above the standard 22 (had the option of cash). I will soon have another 4 afterschool classes a week (I'm cool with this too, we follow a fun textbook and it pays better than standard o/t). My school has now asked me to supervise the new English lounge for another 2 hours a week, answering questions, talking to kids, and making sure they don't break the computers. They don't want to pay o/t for this, and this is going to kill what little prep time I have. I will essentialy have 32 hours a week of classes. Knock off 5 hours for lunch, and that gives me 3 hours prep/downtime.

For those of you who spend time supervising kids in an English Lounge/library environment, are you paid for it?

It totally depends on your school and what kind of arrangement you work out with them.

if you are with students, having and formal responsibilities, it is teaching time.

that has been the rule i have always seen in quite a few years.

logically, too, why do they want you there? are you there for your benefit, or the students? so, benefit the students, in an english environment, you are an english teacher, you must interact with them, you are responsible for them, smells like teaching to me.

on another note, that is absurd they are even asking you to do this if you already have so many hours. when, like you said, are you expected to prepare for class? i bet they arent paying you for the extra time at home you use to prepare. so they better be paying you for the time at school, which goes above your contract. no pay=no work.

also, you could compare this to homeroom teachers, they get paid extra as well.

Antonio, I'm there partly to show students how to use the computers/various CD roms, chat, and partly to make sure they don't break/steal things. It certainly feels like it'll be teaching, I just have to convince my handler of this.

When you say homeroom teachers get paid extra, do you mean they get o/t or some sort of bonus specifically for the time they spend in homerooms? This sounds like a very useful tidbit of info, thanks Smile
