Hi all,
Just wondering about Korean Language Programs at various universities in Seoul.

I've heard pros and cons about Yonsei and Sogang.
But what about Seoul National, Konkuk, Ewha, Hanyang, Kyunghee...etc.

Also it'd be great if I could find a good program that wouldn't be a great hassle to commute from Bundang (Sunae area)...so are there any closer to the South East side of Seoul?

Oh and how much you really improve if you only take one session.

Thanks!

I don't live in Seoul yet but, i've been researching a bit as I will move soon. Yongsai seems harder than Sogang. I've heard good things about both and about Sukmyung Women's Uni which has a free Saturday class. I think I will go for Sogang.

A decent text book (my personal choice is the Integrated Korean series) combined with a willingness to practice what you learn with co-workers will blow any university course out of the water at merely a fraction of the cost.

Whenever one of these types of threads pops up there is always a "do it yourself, save money and buy a book" type of response. I know the individuals that give this type of advice mean no harm but I think the people asking about language schools KNOW that they could save money and study alone but maybe don't want to. I applaud people that can just pick up a book and have the energy to study by themselves without any pressure and practice with co-workers with self-confidence but I think the truth is most people can't do it that way. I know I can't. I need a classroom setting where I am around people that have similar goals. I need the pressure of tests. I need a set schedule. If I try to do it on my own while teaching English I just don't have the energy or the motivation. When I have a weekly vocabulary test the next day I know I have to sit down and study or else I will have wasted a huge chunk of money by failing. Buying a book and practicing what you just learned in the bar or with busy co-workers at your hagwon won't work for everyone. It is not that easy.

Maybe they're intimidated at the thought of trying to teach themselves and don't realize how easy it is to self-teach the Korean language, whose excellent alphabet and easily understandable grammar patterns make it particularly accessible to self-teaching.

If he knows it's an easy language to teach yourself and still wants to take a course for reasons of his own, that's fine. If he didn't know, though, well now he does. In any case, his request for help wasn't getting much of a response, so I felt it was better to offer the little advice I had than to simply ignore his question.

Just started a language course today with a few others in the locality. The local college are running free korean classes for anyone who wants them, it runs for four hours on a saturday and I have to say if I wasn't in a classroom, I too wouldn't be much good at studying....I will still have to motivate myself to learn some more while at home!!

What college is this? Maybe I'll check it out.
