House Democrats predicted that packaging the two proposals in an expedited budget reconciliation bill would help them secure the needed votes on health care because the financial aid bill is popular. In September, the House adopted that bill, the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, by a vote of 253 to 171. |
So, if I want to support Student Loan bill, I gotta support the Healthcare Bill?
Anyone think that is rather dubious? I remember the Republicans attaching a crapload of stuff to the Patriot Bill. I didn't like that. I don't like this. |

Yeah, Congress blows. No wonder its approval ratings are so much lower than Obama's.
But anyhoo, I'm conflicted on the student loan issue. On the one hand, I'm glad it would remove corporate welfare, but on the other hand this bill wouldn't make it any more difficult for someone to get a loan. The profusion of people going into massive debt for dumb degrees would continue. |

The question to ask is why Republicans are blocking student loan reform in the Senate.
"The House adopted a bill that included the president's proposal in September, beating back an intense lobbying effort by the for-profit lenders. But given the industry's allies in the Senate it was clear the bill could not win the needed 60 votes. Instead, legislative leaders had planned to use the budget reconciliation process to circumvent a filibuster and approve the education measure with a simple majority vote."

No reason to single out Republicans. There are Democrats (including that bastard Nelson) who aren't so keen on the bill for the exact same reason.
As the article notes,
Quote: |
Some Democrats in the Senate, where the private student loan industry has strong allies, had resisted tying the two bills together. But federal education officials warned on Thursday that if Congress failed to act, millions of students might see their Pell grants cut by 60 percent. |

Six Democrat senators had written a letter to the majority leader, Harry Reid of Nevada, expressing doubts about the education proposal. |

If you think that one's bad, check out the Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act that Biden got piggybacked onto the Amber Alert. It was originally voted down as an independent bill back when it was called the RAVE act and has absolutely nothing to do with child abductions. This Amber Alert parasite gave the federal government the power to prosecute venue owners for any drug possession or drug use on the part of any individual attending an event at their venues. This was in turn used by federal agents to intimidate venue owners from hosting anti-prohibition activism events. |
