It's done.
Quote:

A wealthy businessman was arrested at home in front of his wife and young son over an email which council officials deemed offensive to gipsies but which he had not even written.

The email, concerning a planning appeal by a gipsy, included the phrase: Its the 'do as you likey' attitude that I am against.

Council staff believed the email was offensive because likey rhymes with the derogatory term pikey.

The 45-year-old IT boss was held in a police cell for four hours until it was established he had nothing to do with the email, which had been sent by one of his then workers, Paul Osmond.

But police had taken his DNA and later confirmed they would be holding it indefinitely.

The businessman, who has asked not to be named, was also fingerprinted in the police investigation estimated to have cost taxpayers up to 12,000.

He said two uniformed officers came to his house on a Sunday afternoon and said he would be handcuffed if he did not accompany them to the police station.

His computer and other internet equipment were also seized.

Gross.

Even if he had written the email, and even if he had outright said something like, "I hate pikeys," this is totally unreasonable. We should be able to express our minds without being arrested. The fact that he had nothing to do with it, and the fact that the entire basis of the arrest was that "likey" rhymes with "pikey" just makes it more ridiculous.

Imagine if you wrote an email to a pest control company saying that your apartment complex was infested with chiggers and they were in need of extermination.

I dont understand. Is the alleged perp some politician or city official? Who was the email to? How did the police even find out about it? Are gypsies even a minority class? What if someon shouted out " I hate rich businessmen"? Is that against the rules also?

Where did you get this story, Mises?

The Thought Police apparently do exist. This would derive from liberal, pc politics and academic-inspired ideological policing, of course.

If true, congratulations to those who have worked so tirelessly to construct this for the last several decades. You have achieved what neither the Nazi nor the Stalinist nor even the East German state could: close, personal surveillance and control over the population and its thoughts and expressions. Utopia, come what may!

In Guy Ritchie"s 2001 movie "Snatch", Jason Statham categorically states "I[Mod Edit]hate Pikies". Why wasn't that movie banned and the actor immediately arrested?

I just read through the whole article ( http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1241994/Businessman-arrested-wife-son--anti-gipsy--email-didn-t-write.html ) and it says nothing about any crime other than having made a potentially racist comment. I argue on this forum a lot over comments or actions others don't believe are racist, but arresting someone for a racist comment when there were no crimes associated with it is completely ridiculous.

"Sussex Police said they had arrested the businessman over suspicion of committing a racial or religious-aggravated offence."

Even worse, apparently they could arrest you for having written or received an email critical of a religious belief.

I'm thinking there has to be some extra detail I'm missing that would allow this situation to make sense.

Yes, I am thinking the same thing. It seems even more extreme than what I am used to. I know those who are quick to take offense remain more or less on the offensive. But I did not know we were at the point this story seems to indicate.

No, this derives from neo-conservative politics in which government snooping of our private communications is justified in the name of "national security" or "preventing terrorism."

Oh, I forgot. "Liberalism" is responsible for all the ills in the world. Rolling Eyes

Ah, forgot to post the link.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1241994/Businessman-arrested-wife-son--anti-gipsy--email-didn-t-write.html

Gopher, I found it on a UK based libertarian site.

http://www.samizdata.net/

The local council in the UK is absolutely tyrannical. They can enter homes without warrants, looking for anti-green activity and anti-social behaviour:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1238800/The-20-000-snooper-army-Vast-number-town-hall-bureaucrats-power-enter-home-warrant.html

In fact, if you find a gun and turn it into police, you'll go to jail for gun possession:

Quote:
A former soldier who handed a discarded shotgun in to police faces at least five years imprisonment for "doing his duty".

Paul Clarke, 27, was found guilty of possessing a firearm at Guildford Crown Court on Tuesday after finding the gun and handing it personally to police officers on March 20 this year.

The jury took 20 minutes to make its conviction, and Mr Clarke now faces a minimum of five year's imprisonment for handing in the weapon.

What a country!

I am waiting for one of those types who ALWAYS supports whatever any Western gov't does to say, "Well, he WAS in possession of a gun, ya know!"

But apparently it is still okay to turn over any kiddie porn you might find to the police. Two burglars stole a laptop, found kp on it, and called the police. The original owner got three and a half years; they got a mere slap on the wrist, but only for the burglary.

For future reference, here's the proper way to handle that situation:

http://www.splcenter.org/intel/intelreport/article.jsp?aid=1109

Quote:
Gray posted bail and went home. Two months later, the father of six with no prior criminal record sent a letter to authorities: If your deputies come onto my property, bring body bags.

Quote:
Armed family members, including Gray's wife, Alicia, took turns patrolling the property. That worried authorities so much so that even when Gray began skipping court appearances, they didn't go arrest him.

Quote:
The police officer who made the decision to make the arrests is a female. If you call her a silly cow, which she is, you would probably be arrested in Britain for a gender-aggravated offence.

Quote:
Chief Inspector Heather Keating said: Sussex Police have a legal duty to promote community cohesion and tackle unlawful discrimination.

We are satisfied we acted appropriately in identifying the owner of the computer used and through this, the identity of the writer of the offending line.

Incidents such as these certainly make me look much more favorably upon Sharee'ah law.
